Palatine Opportunity Center Awarded $5,000 Grant from Verizon

The Palatine Opportunity Center received $5,000 to help utilize technology for increased awareness of the Community Roots Garden at 1475 N. Hicks Road.

The Palatine Opportunity Center, 1585 N. Rand Road recently was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation.

The grant went to support the Roots Community Garden, which is located at 1475 N. Hicks Road and just north of Palatine Fire Station #82, and is meant to help garden volunteers share progress, and to share the garden's offerings with the community through its blog and Facebook page.

“This funding is going to help us build the bridge to teach the benefits of being connected to the internet,” said Kathy Millin, POC executive director.

“Right now we are using the internet for all trouble shooting issues, like why are the leaves on our tomato plants turning yellow? Our garden has a Facebook page and we communicate rain outs, garden times and progress through this page,” she said.

“Verizon Wireless takes great pride in giving back to our communities through the Verizon Foundation," said Barrington Lopez, vice president and general counsel in the midwest for Verizon Wireless.

"The Foundation is focused on using technology to solve critical social issues in the areas of sustainability, education and health care. It was our pleasure to present the Palatine Opportunity Center with a $5,000 donation to support their Roots Community Garden,” he said.
