This article completely ignores the research which has shown that the paranoid propaganda spreadRead More about the supposed physical, mental and societal damage caused by cannabis over the last 100 years were for all intents and purposes pure mythology. Any decision or debate about whether or not to legalize cannabis has to encompass not only the revenue benefit to the State, but also the fact that this is not just accepting something that is going to do irreparable damage just for the sake of gaining tax revenue. When considering what is an acceptable product for adults to use at their own discretion, we must weigh that against other products that have been found acceptable and that have been shown to do more damage such as alcohol or tobacco. Also, when considering the revenue gain, you must also consider the money saved that is currently being spent on investigations, arrests, prosecutions and incarceration for minor cannabis possession offenses. Cannabis is not a panacea for either our health nor our state revenue coffers, but there are a lot of factors that must be considered other than the tax benefits. Why should we control and penalize the use of this product over other products that are no better for you and couldn't our limited law enforcement resources be utilized in prosecuting serious crimes?

To the complainers about how overfunded teachers and schools are, have you ever set foot in aRead More classroom today? What is your brilliant solution to solve thee problem of these money hungry teachers that don't seem to really care about students? After all, of course they got in to teaching for the cushy pensions...

@John Tips "We ourselves went to school where it was common to have up to 30 plus kids in eachRead More class, some of the classes were actually held in trailers! $$$$ OMG the horror!" Duude, that was back in the day when one parent was able to STAY HOME and work with the kid, and SUPPORTED the teacher. These days, not so much. Oh, and your facts about Northern Illinois getting paid a plenty ? maybe for the Management [Admins] but not so much for the workers [Teachers]. You can't "want fries with that" mentality when it comes to teaching. If you do that, the smart educators will get into another field [wouldn't you ?]. You have to class teachers into the same area as corporate trainers and their base pay. As far as getting "plenty" of money, based on population per capita, we need more. Mr. Kirk, Mr. Durbin, Mr. Foster, please help the state you represent out and get hustling and turn the money pipe back on. Oh, and those people talking about the lottery money ? RIGHT ON. We've got to (1) un-"privatize" it, (2) make the big wins a bit lower, and (3) pipe that money back into the school system, [yes, TRS as well as general school money]. You'd be amazed at how much better off we'd be. Work the numbers.
John Tips April 24, 2014 at 11:04 am
Maureen, not all teachers are money hungry! Many however have lost the drive to teach our children.Read More We taxpayers are continually assessed more money, but are getting less for our bucks. Pensions, benefits and allegations of impropriety with our children by teachers are privallent in the news today. We build nice cushiony new buildings, but our children's test scores are overall falling - Why? We put so much money into our school systems today but our overall education is faltering - why? Are our kids dumber then we were - or is it that we have become a society bent on money instead of values? When we make a purchase of anything we look for value, as we don't purchase overpriced items. Today we question the value of the educational support by teachers and administrators who appear more self indulgent then performing the job of instructor/educators. When we were in high school the schools did not charge for parking, or many extra activities. Yet today we have a huge tax burden associated with our educational activities, from grade schools to universities and our kids don't know how to spell or write/read cursive - leaving them behind in World grade education! The system is broken!

Fact! People that commit home invasion are one of the most dangerous types of criminals. The homeRead More owner under federal law has the right to use Deadly Force. As a retired law enforcement officer with 33 1/2 years police are train if its aggravated felonies, and you perceive your life or some else life is in danger of great body harm or death you can use Deadly force, to stop the criminal actions. Once you see that the threat action of the criminal is stopped you can't just continue shoot them. To help prevent home burglaries to your home, put in alarm systems. Also you can buy wireless alarms at Menards that scan a whole area of your home $24.. Also Harbor tools sells a great wireless alarms that also scans a large area $17. You can put the receiver in your bedroom where alarms will sound off. Another thing to do is take your handle off your garage door rope. Criminal use slim jims to grab the handle of the rope and open your garage door. Keep your auto's locked at all times, even in your garage. At night criminals hate light, they are like vampires in the Sun. Aldi was selling wireless motion detector lights for $14. You can put them up on the side of your homes. Put up alarms signs also. Also put locks on your gates. Also if you do use a gun on a home invasion criminal it would be a good idea to buy more in insurance through the NRA or your own insurance company. If have a conceal carry weapon permit, People need to know the law on the use of force.

You cannot offer education to any person who has not had the foundation of paternal guidanceRead More beginning at birth. The maturation of the human entity revolves around initial care as an infant which means communication both oral and by tactile sensation. NURSING an infant is one of the MOST importatnt things that may be offered as a beginning point. Any amount of the process is good, but continuing for the better part of a year is best. TALKING to the infant is also paramount in awakening the receptiveness of the brain as the eyes develop and begin to truly see. Show and demonstrate any and all things. And continue through the pre-teen years. When ANY child is prepared in these ways he or she will be READY to begin secondary schooling and on into the college level and become a resposible, productive AMERICAN. Do as I did. Finish high school. Go to college & get a degree (I paid for myself). Be RESPONSIBLE for yourself. AND Be a GOOD PARENT.. PEPARE your child. THAT is YOUR JOB!!! And THANKS to my parents!!! I think purchasing a home always makes sense; simply for the point of your literally giving away 1/4Read More of your cash flow. With a mortgage you're at least building your own equity. In NYC, especially now, the market is almost always on the upswing. Granted the downpayment of 20% is a chunk of change, but my mortgage and maintenance is less than I was previously paying in rent.

Walter Wnuk April 23, 2014 at 07:24 pm
You cannot borrow against the equity in your rented space/dwelling. After 30 years of rent you haveRead More zero equity. Not really a choice to me. Pride of ownership is also something you cannot get from renting. For those that move frequently I see the allure of renting. Those who stay in one place should consider buying. Tax benefits alone make buying a better choice.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
