Palatine, Fremd High School Students' Achievements Recognized by District 211

Among the awards highlighted by the District 211 board were Golden Apple winners, state award winners in Contest Play and Group Interpretation and winners in Science Olympiad.

At the District 211 School Board meeting May 2, a number of students who attend the high school township district were recognized for achievements in academics and the performing arts.

State Award Winners

Contest Play – a 45 minute performance where students had to portray characters that aged 20 years and took on different extremes in personality.

Fremd High School students: Tyler Johnson, Anna Karnick and Valerie Pizzato.

Group Interpretation – a 30 minute performance where three or more students interpret literature, and there is no full set.  Also, no costumes can be used, all of the performers must dress uniformly. The focus of the performance is on the audience.

Science Olympiad – students compete in different science disciplines. The Palatine High School team won first place in four of 23 events, and placed in six other events at a recent competition at Palatine High School that included 23 teams from area high schools.

Palatine High School Students: Samantha Embrick, Ryan Jannak-Huang, Nadia Khatib, Lawson Kosulic, Giancarlo Rivera Moore, Guia Pascual, Hersh Patel, Madalyn Rasor, Carter Scheve, Ian Smith, Audrey Williams, and Yeo Eun Yun.

Golden Apple Winners – six students attending District 211 were named Golden Apple Scholars. The award is given to not only academic achievers, but those who have beat the odds to create a positive path in their lives. The scholars are required to attend Illinois universities, and teach for at least five years.

Palatine High School recipients:

Marco Arreola, his parents came from Mexico to provide educational opportunities for their children. Marco is in all AP classes, the Spanish Honor Society and the Principal’s Advisory Board. His goal is to become an ESL teacher, and to coach soccer.

Twins Elsie and Tiffany Guerrero, both came from Mexico with their parents for a better life. The family lost their apartment, and the girls both have to work 40 hours a week along with attending schools to help their family survive. Both are involved in a number of AP classes.

Karyn Baldwin from Schaumburg High School; and Fatima Cisneros and Timothy Coukart from Hoffman Estates High School also were recipients.

The end of the school year is almost upon us. The last day of the school year for District 211 is Friday, June 7. Upcoming graduation dates for students attending the two Palatine high schools:

  • Palatine High School – Sunday, June 2 at 2 p.m. Palatine High School gymnasium
  • Fremd High School – Sunday, June 2 at 11 a.m. Sears Centre
