Palatine, Fremd and D211 Student-Built Homes for Sale, Open Houses on Sunday

Open houses will be held at three properties in Palatine this coming Sunday, and will showcase the work of students in D211's Building Construction Program.

Students in District 211’s Building Construction program are in the final stages of completing three houses they have worked on for the past two years.

District 211 will host an Open House for students to showcase their hard work and allow the public to see the homes that are up for sale. The Open House will take place on May 19 from 2 to 4 p.m., and the public will have an opportunity to place bids on a house if they are interested.

“This is a culmination of two years of work for our students, and it’s a great opportunity for our kids to show off what they have learned and accomplished to their parents and community,” said Otis Price, director of Athletics, Activities, and Career Development. “We will open the houses for bid sale, and anyone who is interested can walk through and look at the houses, as well as ask questions while the Building Construction teachers are present.”

All three homes are located within the Fremd and Palatine High School attendance boundaries, and range in style and size. The addresses are as follows: 72 W. Illinois Ave., in Palatine, 86 W. Illinois Ave., in Palatine, and 151 Boynton Ave., in Palatine. Students have been finishing various items on each house, including landscaping, trim and painting, lighting, and other small details.

This year will mark 110 houses to have been completed by students in the Building Construction program throughout the past 39 years. The program allows students from each school the opportunity to learn about various aspects of building a single-family house, including how to read blueprints, what the architecture and construction fields are like, and other marketable skills for after-graduation career opportunities. The houses are built under the supervision of their teachers and building contractors, architects, and other professionals in the field.

“This will add value to the community, because there are three new homes that families can live in,” Price said. “Students also gained experience working on industrial buildings at their schools, which will be around for a long time. This give students pride in something they contributed to their school and community and creates a connection even after they have graduated.”

Next year, the Building Construction students will break ground on two houses, one in Hoffman Estates and another in Palatine. Those homes will be completed within a two-year period.
