October is National Bullying Prevention Month when schools and organizations that serve youth focus the spotlight on the very real challenge of bullying and creating cultures of support and acceptance. For the REALITY Theatre Troupe, bullying prevention lasts all year.
REALITY Theatre opened its 2013 – 14 season at Winston Campus Junior High School in Palatine performing its original play, What’s Your REALITY? to more than 800 students, faculty, and staff. The play, written and developed by REALITY troupe members, follows a group of junior high school students through their Facebook updates, lunch room drama, cheerleading practice, online “vlogs”, and heart to heart chats. Using a combination of straight talk and humor, REALITY troupe members address the issues that are important in the lives of pre-teens and teens.
REALITY Theatre, a program of OMNI Youth Services, is an ensemble of teens presenting healthy choices through the medium of theatre. Representing high schools throughout the Northwest suburbs, REALITY combines the power of creative drama with the impact of positive peer-to-peer communication. Along with bullying prevention, topics include the dangers of underage drinking, drugs, healthy body image, strong relationships, self esteem, cyber-safety, and more. REALITY performs for middle, junior high and high schools; snowball events; health fairs; parent nights; and conferences. REALITY members make a commitment to remain drug, alcohol, and tobacco free.
REALITY is always interested in welcoming new troupe members. Teens with an interest in theatre, performing, or public speaking are encouraged to contact Janet Jesse, REALITY Theatre Troupe Coordinator, to set up a time to visit a REALITY rehearsal. REALITY rehearsals are held on Sunday afternoons from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at OMNI Youth Services in Buffalo Grove.
To visit a rehearsal, schedule a REALITY performance for your school or organization, or for further information, contact: Janet Jesse, REALITY Theatre Troupe Coordinator, at email@example.com or 847-353-1706.
