Palatine Sinkhole: Repairs Could Be Done By Aug. 8

Work to repair a damaged sewer line and sinkhole near the intersection of Hicks Road and Dundee Road should be completed by Aug. 8.

A damaged sewer line and sinkhole that has should be repaired by Aug. 8.

The sinkhole opened along and underneath Hicks Road near the Dundee Road intersection. The sinkhole has caused southbound Hicks Road to be closed near the intersection, with two-way traffic shifted to the northbound lanes.

Sanjay Patel, North Plant manager for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, said work is progressing.

"We have a contractor working on the site 12 hours a day," Patel said. "Things are under control."

Patel said the sewer line is located about 30 feet underground. Once the sewer line is fixed and the sinkhole filled, the impacted area of Hicks Road will be replaced.

The sewer line became damaged and the sinkhole formed Saturday, July 23, . Patel said the focus now is on getting the damaged fixed, an evaluation of what exactly caused the problem will be evaluated.
