9/11 Artifacts Part of Palatine Rural Fire Open House

Palatine Rural Fire Protection District welcomed the community at its annual open house the day before the tenth anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

The Palatine Rural Fire Protection District welcomed the community at its annual open house Saturday, Sept. 10.

The fire district prominently displayed several items obtained from Ground Zero as the event was the weekend of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks anniversary.

A roped off table at the entrance of the station located at the corner of Ela and Palatine Roads in Inverness featured a piece of I-Beam from the Twin Towers along with other pieces of debris from Ground Zero.

At all times during the open house, a firefighter in formal dress attire stood at attention near this display to show respect to their fellow firefighters who were lost that day.

Visitors had the opportunity to share their memories of where they were when they heard the news of the terrorist attacks in a memory book to be kept with the artifacts at the station.

In addition to the many exhibits and activities at the open house, the highlight of the day was a repelling demonstration off of a 100 foot tower truck provided by the Hoffman Estates Fire Department.  A technical rescue team showed how they would rescue a victim that was unable to bring themselves down from a high angle vertical descent.

Hoffman Estates Fire stayed throughout the event and offered sky high rides up in the tower truck to adults and children between repelling demonstrations.

The Palatine Rural Fire Protection District services unincorporated areas of Palatine, Schaumburg Township and the majority of Inverness. The service area is about 17 square miles and covers 17,000 residents.
