Dog Sounds Alarm During Palatine House Fire

Palatine firefighters responded to a house fire in the 700 block of Evergreen at 3:01 this morning. The family dog woke up and alerted the family so they were able to get out safely.

The family dog living at 762 W. Evergreen could be credited with saving the lives of its owners. That's because the dog began to bark just before 3 a.m. and alerted the family to a fire burning in the garage.

The family got out safely, and the Palatine Fire Department arrived on the scene at 3:01 a.m.. According to Batallion Chief Doug Hoyt, heavy fire was showing from the attached garage as firefighters arrived.

"We knocked down the main fire in the garage and another hoseline was brought into the house because it had extended into the first floor of the home" Hoyt said.

The blaze was under control by 3:24 a.m. and no injuries were sustained.

The fire did leave the home uninhabitable. Hoyt said the family was able to find an alternate place to stay nearby.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.

Rolling Meadows Fire Department, Palatine Rural Fire District and Long Grove Fire Protection District assisted.
