ComEd LEEDing the Way

ComEd is committed to protecting the environment and setting an industry-wide example of environmental stewardship.  As part of that commitment, we have been working hard to increase the sustainability of our buildings. This year, we were proud to earn LEED® silver certification for two of our facilities, an office building in Oakbrook Terrace and a training center in Rockford.

The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for design, construction and operation of green buildings.

When we renovated our office space at Lincoln Centre Two in OakBrook Terrace, the project included installation of more efficient water fixtures, ENERGY STAR® qualified equipment and appliances, upgraded lighting fixtures, and construction of a newly consolidated customer call center. We also optimized the use of daylight to reduce the amount of energy expended on lighting.

The USGBC awarded LEED certification to Lincoln Centre Two for its 100 percent purchase of green power, 100 percent use of ENERGY STAR® compliant power, 94 percent rate of recycling construction waste, 73 percent use of regional materials, 40 percent reduction in lighting power density, and other environmental practices.

Our Rockford Training Center was awarded LEED certification for its 100 percent maximization of open space, 81 percent management of construction waste, 98 percent use of certified wood, 40 percent reduction in water use, and other sustainability efforts.

Although this is the first time ComEd facilities have earned LEED certification, it isn’t the first recognition for our environmental efforts.  In addition to an extensive recycling program, we have a nationally recognized green fleet of vehicles and an award-winning prairie restoration program. We continuously assess all of our operations to find new ways to reduce our environmental impact and help customers use less electricity.
