40 Parks in 40 Days - Wally Degner Park

40 Parks in 40 Days is a series highlighting the parks of the Palatine Park District. Additional photos of our 40 Parks in 40 Days series can be found at www.facebook.com/palatineparks.

Wally Degner Park is located at 881 W. Palatine Road and 75 Middleton Avenue in Palatine. The park consists of 6.88 acres of land acquired in three separate parcels in 2002, 2004, and 2006. The park was named after Waldon O. “Wally” Degner who served on the Palatine Park District Board of Commissioners from 1969 to 2005. He is the longest serving member of the Park Board of Commissioners. Mr. Degner was part of various teams over the years that built and improved the vast majority of PPD’s facilities and parks during his tenure. Projects in which he had a hand can be seen throughout the park district boundaries.

This park was originally slated to be called Bluebird Park, in keeping with the District’s policy of naming parks after trees or birds. Through an action taken at the April 26, 2005 meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners, the park was renamed to Wally Degner Park to permanently honor and commemorate Wally’s efforts for the Park District. The park includes both open space and a wooded area along with a playground.
