Firefighters celebrate Ability in Schaumburg

The Schaumburg Professional Firefighters supported Northwest Special Recreation Association's Family Festival in Saturday, June 23.

Firefighters are courageous, committed and always ready at a moment’s notice to help those in need.  There is no better example of this devotion to others than the Schaumburg Professional Firefighters. On Saturday, June 23, twelve Firefighters dedicated their time to support Family Fest, a special event where Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA) program participants enjoy a fun-filled day of games, crafts, music, dancing and lunch.  These Firefighters have volunteered to create smiles on the faces of thousands of individuals with disabilities through this event for over thirty years.

Service and volunteerism is at the core of the Schaumburg Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 4092. NWSRA and Special Leisure Services Foundation, the fundraising arm of NWSRA, are fortunate to have been recipients of their charitable contributions through the years.  The overwhelming appreciation toward the Firefighters is demonstrated by the hugs and high fives given by those in attendance.  “We as a group enjoy giving back to the community and seeing the smiles on people’s faces.  This event is very special to us, and we look forward to continuing our involvement for the next 30 years.” Stated Firefighter Joel Downing.  The Schaumburg Professional Firefighters are true leaders in creating the type of caring and compassionate community that Schaumburg has become.

The Firefighters purchased, grilled and served almost 400 hot dogs and hamburgers, along with chips, cold beverages, fruit and cookies for over 200 individuals with disabilities and their family members. Their dedication is a cornerstone of the success of Family Fest.  NWSRA provides recreational opportunities for children and adults with disabilities throughout the northwest suburbs of Chicago, including Schaumburg
