Palatine Man Killed in Afghanistan Had Left IT Job to Pursue Missionary Work

A Palatine man who was killed in an attack in Afghanistan last week, was survived by his wife, who is now recovering from the attack in Germany, according to the Chicago Tribune.

John Gabel, 32, who died in the attack along with his father, Gary, worked in information technology for several years before leaving his job to pursue missionary work, which a coworker described as "a calling," the Tribune reports.

Gary Gabel had traveled to Afghanistan to see his son's clinic in Kabul, according to CBS News. The two were killed when an Afghan police security guard began shooting at them and a group of people entering a hospital in Kabul, according to CBS News.
