How to Maximize Your College Campus Visit

What to look for and how to get the most out of your college campus visit with your teen

During Spring Break week quite a few people told me they spent their time visiting colleges and universities with their teens. With many schools requiring downpayments or payments for tuition in May, the rush is on to check out schools.

I found some good articles online on How to Help Your Child Choose the Right College, How to Choose a College Based on Your Interests, and The Top 7 things You Must Do on your College Visit. But, what is your advice?

I remember taking a family vacation around the Midwest as we toured college campuses.

I had gone to small private schools for high school and so I wanted my college to be a Big School with all of the sports and activities that go along with that. We drove to see the University of Michigan, Michigan State, University of Wisconsin at Madison and Green Bay, believe it or not. Much to my Dad's disappointment I refused to go visit the University of Illinois because he went there and was pushing hard for me to go. (What can I say, I was a snotty teen and a contrarian.)

Finally though, I knew I wanted to study journalism and the University of Iowa had one of the finest journalism schools in the country. After visiting the campus, it was a done deal.

Most of all I remember that the time we spent together was fun. There is a lot of time to talk while driving and it was fun to tour the Midwest.

My kids aren't near this stage yet and my own personal experience is so far in past that my memories are quite dusty so I wanted to ask you to share your advice in how you prepared for the trip, what you found most helpful during your college visit, and how you had FUN with your child in the process. Did the whole family go on the trip or did you take the opportunity for some one-on-one time with your teen? If you can't think of anything, just share a funny college story!
