How Well Do You Know Your Popcorn?

Article describing the basic differences between the two types of popcorn kernels.

I bet you didn't know that there are two types of popcorn, and I don't mean buttered or plain. The two types are butterfly, and mushroom. Well fancy that!

Butterfly popcorn is the most used. Butterfly popcorn is characterized by its wing-like shape that emerges when the kernel pops. This is the most widely used type due to it's inexpensiveness, and the ability for it to take less popcorn to fill up a space. In other words - you get less for your money.

Mushroom popcorn is characterized by its mushroom type of appearance when popped. Mushroom popcorn is mainly used in the gourmet popcorn industry due to its more uniform texture, and denser consistency as it holds up well when mixed with flavors and coated with those delicious candied toppings. It does take more of this delicious type of kernel to fill up its container and it is more expensive to use. And, it's quality you can taste.
