Navy Recruits to Spend Thanksgiving with Legion

There is still time to donate to American Legion Post 690's annual Thanksgiving dinner for Great Lakes Navy recruits.

It's hard to be far from home at the holidays, but American Legion Post 690 of Palatine is opening its doors to about 35 recruits from Great Lakes Naval Station to make their Thanksgiving as homey as possible.

A full day of activities has been planned, including bowling, movies and games.

Phone home

Recruits will also have access to smart phones donated by AT&T to make unlimited phone calls home to family and friends.

"For nearly 100 years, AT&T has supported our active military and veterans and this donation is keeping with that tradition," said Dave Fine, vice president and general manager for Illinois. "Thanksgiving is a time to connect with loved ones and we are proud to provide that service to all of our customers, and especially these men and women who are serving our country."

So much food!

The Thanksgiving feast, with all the traditional trimmings, is going to be huge, said Post 690 spokesperson Bill Pohlman.

"They are getting so much food. I'm making 50 pounds of mashed potatoes Wednesday night!"

There is still time for community members to make a donation to the Legion's effort or sign up to volunteer on the day of the event.

Donations can be dropped off at the Legion Hall at 122 W. Palatine Rd.

Checks made payable to the American Legion with a notation of Support a Sailor can be sent to the American Legion Attention Jeff Van Horn 122 West Palatine Road, Palatine, IL 60067.  If requested, the Legion will issue a letter for tax deductions.
