An Introduction to Riesling Wine

Riesling is a versatile and popular white wine. It is a great alternative to Chardonnay. If you want a white wine that is crisp and light, Riesling is a great choice. Most Rieslings are sweet, but dry ones are also made. Here we’ll discuss the history of Riesling, what kind of flavors and aromas you can expect, and what it pairs well with.

Riesling originated in Germany. It is a hardy and noble grape that can withstand cold temperatures and grow in rocky soil, but doesn’t do well in warm environments. Riesling grapes are frequently grown in river lands. Although they may have originated in Germany, the grapes are now grown throughout the world. Alsace, France and Columbia Valley, Washington are both known for their own takes on Riesling. Both regions produce a crisp Riesling, but France's is drier than Washington's. Riesling is also made in Australia, California, South Africa, and Eastern Europe. Riesling grapes take extra time to ripen and knowing when to harvest takes patience.

Whether a Riesling is crisp and dry or sweet and lush, it will have many fruit influences. Rose and peach are common aromas, as are apple and spice. California Rieslings often smell and taste of melons. Citrus, peach, even tropical notes are all common in Riesling. Those produced in rocky soil will have mineral influences.  Unlike Chardonnay, Riesling does not undergo the malolactic fermentation process, thereby preserving the tart, acidic characteristics of the wine and giving it a thirst-quenching quality.

Riesling can be paired with all sorts of foods. Fish or shellfish is a safe choice, as is chicken or pork. The sweeter Rieslings may be enjoyed as an aperitif or with dessert, whereas the less sweet can be paired with cheese. Riesling even matches well with Asian and Mexican food. It is a versatile wine because of the variety of flavor.

Riesling is definitely a wine that should not be overlooked, and the great thing is that there is a Riesling for nearly every situation. Whether you are looking for a sweet wine or a dry wine, you can find the perfect Riesling for your taste. As Riesling grows in popularity, new regions are producing it to fulfill the demand.
