Clean Up of Former Citgo Property Downtown Continues

The Village of Palatine purchased the .37 acres of property at Plum Grove and Palatine Road in 2011, demolished the former gas station and has been dealing with environmental clean-up ever since.

The Village of Palatine Monday authorized $39,400 to continue environmental clean-up work at the corner of Plum Grove and Palatine Road, where the former Citgo gas station was located.  The property at 5 W. Palatine Road is .37 acres and cost the village $1.2 million to purchase back in 2011. Though underground storage tanks have been removed, the area is still in need of environmental consulting to ensure contaminants have been eliminated.  "We entered into a program to abate contamination on the property, and now we have additional monitoring. We hope to get a letter of full abatement in about a year," said Mike Jacobs, deputy village manager.  And until that letter comes, the property itself must remain vacant, and undeveloped.  "We …

Palatine's Speedy Citgo Plans Progressing

Palatine has acquired the Speedy Citgo gas station property at 5 W. Palatine Road.

Palatine has hired a consultant to assess any environmental remediation that must be done to the Speedy Citgo gas station property at 5 W. Palatine Road. The village hired Shaw Environmental to complete a report that will be submitted to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). Palatine Deputy Village Manager Mike Jacobs said the building on the property should come down sometime this summer. Beyond that, the future of the property is unknown. "No decision has been made for the long-term use of the property," Jacobs said. "No decision has been made regarding whether the property will be returned to open space or possibly sold in the future."
