Kirk Climbs 237 Steps Returning to Senate

Highland Park senator comes back to work just under a year after suffering a stroke.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) returned to work today as he climbed 237 steps to the entrance of the Senate side of the United States Capitol just under a year after suffering a major stroke. Assisted by Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kirk walked slowly using a cane completing the ascent 10 minutes before the Vice President was scheduled to gavel the Senate into session for the 113th Congress. Biden was not worried about the timing. “You’ve got all day, pal,” the vice president said to Kirk at the bottom of the stairs. To IMHO...would you have pushed for Franklin Roosevelt to resign? He smoked, drank martinis (sometimes it is said with his misstresses) and had servants spend hours dressing him everyday. His "service" to America included running for president even when he knewhe was deathly ill. Did IMHO carry on about why STroger didn't resign until the politics was arranged to protect his kid?   more ›

Kirk Speaks, Walks on Video

Senator releases video thanking citizens and showing his rehab effort.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) released a video Tuesday thanking the citizens of Illinois in his own voice for their support during his rehabilitation from a stroke suffered Jan. 21 and three resulting surgeries. Kirk left the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago Friday to continue his recovery from the stroke at the home of family members. Earlier: Kirk Heads Home From Rehab Center “I want to thank everyone especially for the patience they have given me to recover from a big stroke," said Kirk. "(And also) to the people of Illinois for granting me the honor to represent them in the United States Senate. Kirk Continues to Make Progress

Family thanks everyone who has been supportive.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park), who suffered a stroke Saturday, remains in serious condition today at Northwestern Memorial Hospital despite making progress, according to Dr. Richard Fessler, the neurosurgeon who is treating him. “Senator Kirk is progressing as expected and we continue to be hopeful about his long term prognosis,” Fessler said. “He remains in serious condition and is being monitored closely.” As of Tuesday, Fessler reported Kirk began breathing on his own. He was also talking then, responding to questions and even asked for his cell phone, according to Fessler.
