Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …

Jonathan Greenberg Talks Pension, Tax Reform at Cafe

The Republican candidate for the 57th House district met Northbrook residents at Caribou on Tuesday morning to share thoughts on Springfield.

Northbrook resident and Republican candidate for the 57th House district, Jonathan Greenberg, met a few community members at Caribou on Wednesday morning, and told voters — some of whom don't even live in the 57th — that he is more concerned with fiscal reform than conservative social policy. "One thing the Republican caucus needs to focus on is fixing the budget and leave social issues on the back burner," Greenberg said.  The casual conversation was organized by Patch blogger Kati Spaniak. She asked Greenberg about his immediate plans, if elected, to "fix, vote or change what's affecting my family." The candidate talked about the pension deficit and Illinois tax rates as some of the biggest threats to the state's prosperity, along with …

Letter to the Editor

Letter: Peter Roskam, Todd Akin Are 'Birds of a Feather'

To send a letter to the editor, email Charlotte@patch.com.

Don’t be fooled!  Peter Roskam and Todd Akin are birds of a feather.  We may be appalled by Akin’s ridiculous claims about legitimate rape not resulting in pregnancy, but both Roskam and Akin are of the same mind when it comes to women, women’s rights and women’s health.  Peter Roskam is a proud co-sponsor of HR 3, which redefines rape to narrow a woman’s right to choose.  Both Roskam & Akin would like to redefine to separate so-called “forcible rape” from statutory rape.  As our President said, “rape is rape.”  Gentlemen, do you really want to legitimize rape that results from adults taking advantage of vulnerable, underage children?  Shame on you Peter Roskam!   If you are skeptical, just look at Roskam’s voting record on women’s issues…

Santorum Answers Student Questions in Arlington Heights

Rick Santorum spoke at Hersey High School on Friday while campaigning to win the Republican presidential primary in Illinois Tuesday.

Former Pennsylvania senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke to a packed theater of students and faculty at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights on Friday, ahead of Illinois’ primary on Tuesday. Santorum criticized President Barack Obama for dividing the country and said this was, perhaps, the most important election since 1860. He said America was great, not as the president suggested because of its commitment to entitlement programs, but because of its founding principles. “Without exception, we are the greatest country in the world,” Santorum said. Earlier: Gingrich says package tracking could be used to locate illegal immigrants. After completing about a 20-minute stump speech, Santorum answered three …

State Sen. Matt Murphy To Seek Re-Election

Republican Matt Murphy will seek re-election in 2012 the newly-drawn 27th District.

Republican State Senator Matt Murphy announced that he will seek re-election in 2012 in the 27th District. Murphy said the state's budget woes and taxes remain at the forefront of his priorities. The state has consistently been late with payments to local school districts and late in disbursing tax revenue back to the village of Palatine. "There's no question that those who rely on state government funding, are looking at the state to deliver on what it has promised and in a timely fashion," Murphy said. Murphy's district was changed a bit by realignment. The district used to include about half of Barrington Township, that no longer is the case. The district also used to include part of Buffalo Grove and Wheeling. The newly drawn district …
