Two Palatine Wrestlers Place in Berman Classic

The two-day tournament is now in its 58th year, and was held at Palatine High School December 27-28. PHS Seniors Rocky Allen and Sergio Hernandez placed 6th and 8th, respectively.

In the post-Christmas excitement, Palatine High School hosted their biggest wrestling tournament of the season, the 58th Annual Berman Holiday Classic. Palatine is the only school from District 211 who takes part in the tournament, where they went up against wrestlers from 27 other schools on December 27-28. Senior Rocky Allen, who is in the 195lb. weight class, took 6th place while Sergio Hernandez, in the 220 lb. weight class and also a senior, placed 8th. Allen and Hernandez were the only two wrestlers from Palatine to place, and the school took 26th overall.  "While we were overmatched in some spots, our team didn’t give up and kept pushing,” said Dan Collins, varsity wrestling coach at Palatine High School. Pirate Wrestlers Struggle at Home Tournament

A young Palatine team placed one wrestler at the two-day Berman Holiday Wrestling Classic at Palatine High School.

Palatine heavyweight Nick Hoover stood quietly near his opponent's corner after losing a wrestle-back match at the Berman Holiday Wrestling Classic. As one of the Lincoln-Way East coaches got in some post-match yelling at the ref, Hoover waited to shake the coach's hand, as is tradition. After about 30 seconds of patience, Hoover was called away by one of his coaches. "It's almost too much," Pirates head coach Dan Collins said of Hoover's politeness. "But as soon as he gets on the mat, he flips the switch. It's hard to coach that."   Hoover was the only Pirate to place at the two-day tournament that wrapped Wednesday.
