Another winter storm is headed our way and Palatine public works is ready and waiting.
As another winter storm is expected to hit early Tuesday, the Palatine Public Works Department has already taken steps to be as prepared as possible. "We have pre-treated the main roads in all six districts with a salt and beet juice mixture, and we have crews ready to come in by 3 a.m. to start scouting the roads," said Matt Barry, public works director. A winter storm warning has been issued for all of Cook County Tuesday and is expected to affect morning and evening rush hour traffic. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Palatine should be hit hard by around 10 a.m. with heavy snow expected to fall through midnight. Though major snowfall did not affect the north and northwest suburbs, temperatures will only reach the upper 20's today. The National Weather Service says ice and windy conditions are concerns.
We were fortunate here in Chicago's north suburbs to have received only a nominal amount of snowfall during last night's Winter Storm Warning, but frigid temperatures and strong winds could cause ice and other dangerous travel conditions. According to the National Weather Service, flurries are expected this morning wth cloudy skies that will clear for the sun this afternoon. Wind gusts will reach as strong as 40 mph and highs in the upper 20's are expected, the National Weather Service reports. Commonwealth Edison is reporting that approximately 12,000 customers in Illinois do not have power, and says crews are working to restore it by Saturday. Winter storm warning in effect, with heaviest snowfall expected between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. today. Commonwealth Edison is expecting outages and travel will be dangerous.
The commute home could be a bear if the Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service remains unchanged. Heavy rain now is expected to change to snow late this afternoon, the National Weather Service predicts, and the heaviest amount of snow could begin around 5 p.m. and last until 9 p.m. Between two and six inches will likely fall, with the majority in the northwest suburbs, including Palatine and Arlington Heights. Wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour will affect visibility and cause near blizzard conditions, the National Weather Service reports.
