Palatine Looks to Change Up Street Fest for Young People

The village of Palatine will consider adding new activities to better engage young people ages 16-20 during Palatine Street Fest 2013.

In addition to approving the many details to allow planning for Palatine Street Fest 2013 to move forward, the Village of Palatine will consider the possibility of adding new activities and entertainment for attendees 16 to 20 years of age for this year's event. According to a village memo on the proposition, this age group tends to ‘congregate’ on the west side of the Street Fest parameters, and ideas on how to provide more events aimed at drawing them in have been explored over the last several years. The possibilities include adding a second and smaller stage in Lot 14, according to the memo, which is located north of Towne Square. The new features could include live bands and local entertainment during the day, and a DJ and dance music…

How about a dance-off or kareoke? Or daytime activities like wheelbarrow, potato sack races, bags, etc. Kids should pre-register as a team and possibly even pay a small fee to enter. As far as music goes, probably just a DJ...or maybe a battle-of-the-bands.   more ›

Video Gaming: Palatine Takes Wait-and-See Approach

Village council decides to wait at least one year before again considering at least four applications from Palatine businesses who desire to have video gaming in their establishments.

In light of applications from businesses including Gators, Alley 64, Pops and Splinters, the Village of Palatine decided to wait at least one year to consider allowing video gaming.  "We could give this some time, take a wait-and-see approach on this, see what other villages decide to do," said Brad Helms, District 6 councilman.  "We are all in concurrence that we would prohibit video gaming," said Aaron Del Mar, District 1 councilman.  A poll of the council showed their preference would be to wait a minimum of one year to revisit the issue, and that video gaming itself at this time is not desired.  Village Manager Reid Ottesen said village ordinance clearly states video gaming is not allowed in Palatine.  Ottesen said he will be sending …

Barsanti Considers Litigation Against Palatine After 'No' Vote on Chickens

The Palatine village council unanimously voted against allowing a chicken coop in the backyard at a residence in the 500 block of Daniels Road. The petitioners are now considering litigation against the village for violation of due process.

The tone was slighly contentious at the village council meeting Monday night, as resident Vanessa Barsati attempted to plead her case so she could install a chicken coop in her backyard at 511 Daniels Road.  "Previous issues [with a neighbor] have not been resolved, this was tabled with the intention that something might be worked out here," said Aaron Del Mar, District 1 councilman.  The concerns expressed by resident Ann Harrison, who resides in the 300 block of Elm Street near Daniels Road, included increased noise from chickens, fears they would attract predatory animals and negatively affecting property values in the neighborhood. Barsanti said Harrison refused to speak with her about her her concerns to try and find a resolution. "If…

I made a comment.. it is my opinion.. There is no need to be rude in comments about my post. 1 neighbor came forth to object the chickens. So this 1 neighbor has this much power? Seems unfair to me. It is just my thought on the matter.   more ›

Palatine Revisits Backyard Chicken Coops

The Village of Palatine will consider granting a special use permit at its meeting tonight for a backyard chicken coop at a residence in the 500 block of Daniels Road.

The Village of Palatine has backyard chicken coops back on the table at its meeting tonight.  This issue was first brought forth in March of this year by Palatine residents Vanessa and Jason Barsanti, who live in a home on a half acre of land at 511 Daniels Road. Vanessa Barsanti said publically that organically grown food is healthier. Other benefits she cited are natural insect control since hens eat grubs and earwigs. The couple authored a proposed amendment to Palatine's zoning code that would allow people to "harbor, keep or raise" female chickens, and that hens be kept "within a pen, coop, building or other enclosure sufficient in size and strength to confine such animals to the owner's property." There appeared to momentum on the …

The funny thing is hens make less noise then most peoples dogs, and smell far less worse when raising a backyard flock then most peoples own dogs manure. There is a lot of useful information you can find on the internet about backyard flocks to back up any concerns and to support your case. We had a similiar situation where we live we fought and now have our 7 girls living in our backyard free …   more ›

Village Approves Parking Restriction and Privacy Fence; Council Holds Closed Session

Village approved a parking restriction and a privacy fence; Council Members hold a special, closed session Tuesday night.

The Village of Palatine Council approved a new parking restriction near Sycamore Park and granted a minor amendment to allow a privacy fence at the Windhaven Condominiums Tuesday night. “No Parking Anytime” signs will be put up on N. Clark Drive between Jane Addams Drive and E. Carpenter Drive, near Sycamore Park in Palatine. The Village approved the parking restriction after officers with the Palatine Police Department noticed the dangers the current parking regulations created for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.  Part of the Palatine Park District, Sycamore Park has soccer and football fields, tennis courts and baseball and softball fields. During events and games at the park cars often park on both sides of N. Clark Drive, …
