Local Veterans Share Memories

For Memorial Day, veterans tell their stories to Patch editors and readers.

Their stories are painful and poignant. For Memorial Day, Patch interviewed local veterans from Lake and McHenry counties and shared their stories here through stories, photos and video. We are honored so many veterans chose to share their stories with us, and we are honored to share them with you. Read through for excerpts or follow the links to each Patch site for the full story. Each story introduces you to a different local veteran. Each story aims to put their memories into words. Each story is honest and emotional. And each story is worth telling.   Jim Mertz also volunteers his time to educate on the importance of patriotism and talks to local fifth graders about the American flag. By Lee Ann Gill More than 40 years later, Jim Mertz…

Traditionally, it is observed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.  This time and date coincides with the exact time and date of the signing of the Armistice in 1918, bringing an end to hostilities between the Allies and Germany during World War I. Veterans Day now honors all veterans, not just those of World War I. A local sports bar will hold a fundraising event this weekend to aid military veterans. The 6th annual Vet Fest fundraiser to benefit the North Chicago Veteran's Administration Hospital will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6 from noon to 6 p.m. at Splinters Sports Pub. Splinters is at 2070 N. Rand Rd., in the Caputo's Market Center. Vet Fest …
