Palatine Pirates take 7-2 defeat to Warren Blue Devils in men's baseball playoffs.
It was a rough final outing for the Palatine Pirates men’s baseball team as they succumbed 7-2 to the superior pitching of the Warren Blue Devils. The Blue Devil’s pitcher, Ryan Kennedy, worked his breaking ball around a generous strike zone to keep the Pirates neutralized on offense. “I was feeling really good today,” Kennedy said after the game as he massaged his throwing arm. Palatine head coach, Paul Belo conceded that while his team did some good things, “the kid on the mound was definitely a factor.” This is the second year the Blue Devils will be going to the Sectional Championships. Palatine finishes their season as the regional champions at 23-15. Palatine jumped out to an early lead, capitalizing off of an outfield error, but the…

Fremd Vikings women's soccer defeats the Palatine Pirates 3-1 to advance in state tournament.
The Fremd Viking’s women soccer team is headed to the sectional finals. In a game billed as the Kinsella Cup (state version), Fremd defeated crosstown rival Palatine 3-1. Palatine head coach Willie Filian said his girls put together a strong run at the end of the year to get to this far, but Fremd dashed the Pirate’s hopes of advancing in the state tournament with Viking Sophomore Michelle Mottonen striking first in the 11th minute of the first half. The goal was a culmination of a relentless Viking attack during the first 10 minutes. Senior midfielder, Amanda Filian, led the Pirates attack, charging downfield in the 13th minute of the first half. Amanda Filian's efforts were the reason the Pirates were able to advance to play Fremd, …

Palatine's boys' lacrosse team suffered a 7-5 loss to visiting Glenbrook North on Thursday in each team's final tune-up before the post season.
Despite jumping out to an early 3-1 lead, Palatine's boys lacrosse team watched the visiting Glenbrook North Spartans score four unanswered goals across three periods to claim a 7-5 victory, spoiling the Pirates' senior night at Chic Anderson Stadium. Thursday's contest marked the final regular season game for each school. Though Palatine (11-5) enters the post season on a three game losing skid, head coach Heath McFaul, has been more than pleased with the way he's team has competed. "I think our record in the regular season was great and I'm proud of these kids for playing so well," said McFaul, whose team finished 3-15 in 2010. "It's certainly a difference from our record last season and it's a testament to how hard they worked in the …

Fremd beat Palatine 3-2 but the real fight was aimed at Cancer as both programs came together to "Strike Against Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma."
Friday's softball game between the Fremd Vikings and visiting Palatine Pirates was bigger than just another installment of the heated crosstown rivalry. Having come together with the rest of the Mid Suburban League to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness in years past, both programs decided this year would be different; it would be much more personal. Denny Lynch is the father-in-law of both Fremd head coach, Jim Weaver, and Palatine head coach, Jeff Manz. Lynch, who spent 32-years teaching and coaching at Rolling Meadows High School, was diagnosed ten years ago with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma; cancer of the lymphoid tissue, including the spleen and other organ's of the immune system. Friday's contest featured a raffle, bake sale and T-…

Palatine High School's boys' baseball team has the talent, leadership and drive to be successful in 2011; they just need to put it all together.
Despite early cancellations, temperatures often at or below freezing, and a 1-3 start, Palatine's varsity boys' baseball team remains unfazed. Even with the Pirates' slow start, the morale is high amongst a team that boasts a multitude of senior talent in its starting lineup. Ninth year Palatine head coach, Paul Belo, believes his kids have the pieces to be successful in 2011, even after dropping a 7-1 contest to the visiting Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers (1-1) Tuesday. "We know we have a good team and we know that we have a chance to be successful this spring," Belo said. "It's just a matter of putting things together and playing a complete game." It looked as if junior right-hander Kurt Becker was on his way to a complete game against…

Fremd's Girls' Basketball team picked up its fifth consecutive victory on Friday night, downing rival Palatine 48-36 at home on senior night.
The stands were packed, the gym was decorated and the band played a victory tune for the Fremd Vikings (18-4, 6-0) as they downed crosstown rival Palatine 48-36 at home on senior night. "This is what you want on a night like this," said Fremd head coach, Dave Yates. "I'm extremely proud of this group of seniors - they've done everything we've asked and more this year. They're great leaders, they're fantastic kids, they're role models and they deserved this win tonight." Yates honored his group of six-seniors by starting five of them and calling timeout immediately after the Vikings won the opening tip to allow Bridget Kubis to replace classmate Mary Sorensen. "Not every team has the type of camaraderie this team has," the coach added. …

Egan Malley scored 15 points off the bench for the Pirates, who defeated Vernon Hills on the road, 49-44 Friday night.
Senior Egan Malley's three-pointer with 1:12 remaining gave Palatine its first lead since a 9-8 advantage in the first quarter, and the Pirates closed the game on an 8-0 run to tame the Cougars, 49-44, on Friday night in Vernon Hills. "I saw John [Millin] drive baseline, so when the ball moved down, I just tried to find an open spot," said Malley, who finished with a game-high 15 points. "He made a great pass and the shot fell." The Pirates (7-10), who scored just two points in the second quarter and trailed by as many as 11 in the third, slowly began to chip away, thanks in large part to junior, Tommy Hauert, who grabbed a team-high six rebounds and scored all of his 14-points in the second half. Vernon Hills (11-6) took its time, picking…

Palatine High School's two-set loss on Sept. 28 has the varsity girls volleyball team ready to refocus for last month of the season.
Despite solid individual efforts from several Palatine players, the Pirates were unable to walk away with a victory at home Tuesday night against the Barrington Broncos, losing in two sets (13-25, 16-25). Senior Kaley Sierawski led the way offensively for the Pirates with five kills, including a game tying kill early in the first. An athletic dig by senior Gabby Mattes led to another crushing kill by Sierawski during the first set. Junior Laura Kluk also contributed on offense with nine assists, but these individual performances were not enough to hold off the Broncos, who won the first set 13-25. "We have some great talent on our team," Pirates head coach Dan Gavin said. "We have some great kids on our team, but nobody is good enough to …

First-year coach and state-level captain sparking dormant program.
Those attending the Hinsdale South Hornet Relays on Sept. 11 who glanced toward the shallow-end corner where the Palatine High School girls swimming and diving team made camp might have struggled to pick out the group's coach. That's because 27-year-old Brittany Berleman shares the youthful look and enthusiasm of the teenagers she leads. In her first season as Pirates head swimming coach after four years as an assistant, Berleman is confident Palatine can re-establish itself as the power it was in the 1980s and 1990s. But it's a humble confidence. When asked about her promotion, Lewis University's seven-time Division II All-American is all business. "It's a lot more paperwork," Berleman said with a sigh before giving the positives. "…
