The father of a senior at Palatine High School passed away suddenly last weekend after falling down a flight of stairs. Now the school, non-profit organizations and the business community, is rallying to support the family.
The father of a Palatine High School senior died suddenly last weekend, and the Palatine community is now gathering around to support the family. Barry Walls, the father of a senior at Palatine High School, fell down a flight of stairs on Saturday, December 8 and died of his injuries in the hospital. Walls lived most of his adult life in Palatine, and his wife Dawn is a PHS graduate. He was a former Lance Corporal in the United States Marines, a carpenter, active with the Cub Scouts of American and volunteered with the Palatine Jaycees, according to his obituary. PATH, Palatine Assisting Through Hope recently held their 7th annual Day of Giving. Close to 1,500 people were served through clothing, bicycle and other donations during the two day event at Palatine Opportunity Center.
A total of 1,461 people were served by PATH-Palatine Assisting Through Hope (PATH) at their 7th annual Day of Giving. During the two day event PATH held Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24 at the Palatine Opportunity Center, individuals in-need stopped by to "shop" for clothing, household needs and 48 refurbished bicycles donated by Mike's Bike Shop, at no cost. The Palatine-based non-profit organization is currently seeking volunteers and gently-used or new clothing donations. Since 2006, "Palatine Assisting Through Hope" has sponsored the Day of Giving event, meant to give a helping hand to those in need.

Vania Aguirre was 23 when her parents were killed in a car crash and she was thrust into a role she never imagined.
On a fall night three years ago, a Palatine family was shattered in an instant. Guillermo and Rafaela Aguirre were heading home from a church function in Elgin when their vehicle was hit head-on by a car that swerved into their lane. The couple was killed in the crash that occurred in Barrington Hills on Route 62 west of Old Sutton Road. It was Sept. 29, 2007, and they had just celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary the Tuesday prior. Behind them that night were their three daughters who were following in another car. Day of Giving attendees received winter coats, bicycles and a variety of other donated items, but volunteers took away something as well.
Tis the season to give thanks, but it is also a time when able parties can provide a helping hand to others who are less fortunate. That is the motto that is not only abided by between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but is a year-round commitment made by PATH-Palatine Assisting Through Hope. PATH's fifth annual Day of Giving was held Nov. 27 at the Palatine Opportunity Center (POC) located at 1585 N. Rand Rd. A 'VIP of POC' event was also sponsored by PATH the night before, fashioned as a thank you to individuals who made a nominal monetary donation and volunteered for the organization. ‘Palatine Assisting Through Hope’ Sponsors Fifth Annual Charitable Event Aimed At Providing Warmth for the Winter
On Saturday November 27, Palatine-based non-profit PATH will sponsor its fifth annual Day of Giving. The event is held at the Palatine Opportunity Center (POC) and allows needy families to select donated clothing for the winter months ahead. Volunteers are needed on the day of the event as well as days leading up to it, and clothing donations are desired with an emphasis on coats and winter clothing for children. "We want to get kids dressed warm for the winter, that is part of our main focus; the Day of Giving began with that idea," said Debbie Rohrwasser, co-founder and secretary of PATH.
