District 1 Councilman Aaron Del Mar chose not to run for reelection, and District 15 Board President Tim Millar ran unopposed for his seat. Mayor Jim Schwantz, Clerk Marg Duer and Councilmen Brad Helms and Greg Solberg all ran unopposed.
Oaths of office are planned at tonight's Palatine Village Council meeting for four incumbents, in addition to one new councilman who were elected in the April 9 election. And, retiring District 1 Councilman Aaron Del Mar will be formally recognized for his contributions to the Village of Palatine. Del Mar chose not to run again for his seat after serving one term. Current District 15 Board President Tim Millar ran unopposed for the District 1 council seat, and will be sworn in as the newest member on the council. Incumbents including Mayor Jim Schwantz, Village Clerk Marg Duer, and Councilmen Greg Solberg (District 4) and Brad Helms (District 6) all ran for reelection, and were unopposed.

The petitioner, who managed J.J. Peppers before they closed, wanted to open a liquor store in the strip mall at the intersection of Plum Grove and Illinois. The village council voted unanimously against the petition for a special use.
A liquor store will not be moving into the former J.J. Peppers convenience store location at 44 W. Illinois, after the Palatine Village Council Monday voted unanimously against a special use permit that would have allowed it. The petitioner, Bharatbhai Patel, managed J.J. Peppers for the last four years, and wanted to open a store called Palatine Liquors, that would have sold alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, ice cream and lottery tickets. The proposal for a special use permit was previously voted down by the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) by a 3-2 vote before coming before the village council for final consideration. A pinning ceremony was held at the Palatine Village Council meeting for six promotions, four new firefighters, a new fire marshal and chaplain.
The Palatine Village Council Monday meeting was the setting for a number of official pinning ceremonies that highlighted promotions and new faces within the Palatine Fire Department. “These men have challenged themselves to go above and beyond to become leaders in the future. We’ve got a fire department in Palatine that is second to none,” said Mayor Jim Schwantz. New owners Jimmy Iurio and Walt Oswald plan a number of changes, but a number of things about the Palatine establishment will stay very much the same.
The Palatine Village Council Monday approved a liquor license and the transfer of a special use ordinance for what will soon become Brandt’s of Palatine. Owners and Palatine residents Jimmy Iurio and Walt Oswald plan a March 1 opening (latest by March 15), in what was formerly known as Brandt’s The Little Café, a restaurant with a long and nostalgic history in the village. The Palatine Village Council approved an agreement aimed at providing protection against rising fuel costs.
The Palatine Village Council Monday voted to allow the village manager to purchase fuel in advance in an effort to save money on fuel costs. The village has historically explored different ways to purchase fuel at the best prices; they include fixed margin price contracts, forward purchase contracts and spot purchasing, according to a village memorandum. Village Manager Reid Ottesen said spot purchasing has proven the most successful in recent years, because it locks in prices that will last through the end of the year. Spot purchasing is when a volume of fuel is purchased in advance for use over a 12 month time frame. "This can provide us some security and help to stay in budget," Ottesen said. The Palatine village council gave village manager authority to negotiate a lease with Tap House Grill to locate at 56 W. Wilson.
A new restaurant could be coming to town in the near future to breathe new life into the former Mia Cucina location. Monday, the Palatine Village Council voted to allow Village Manager Reid Ottesen to negotiate a lease with Tap House Grill for the 10,000 square foot property located at 56 W. Wilson Street. In late November, Palatine Patch readers weighed in on what they would like to see at the location. The upcoming budget is expected to be approved at the Monday, December 10 village council meeting. The property tax levy has seen decreases for second year in a row, and no new fees or taxes will be implemented.
The Palatine Village Council held its last pubic hearing on the proposed 2013 budget Monday, December 3. Village Manager Reid Ottesen explained staff has taken a conservative approach toward the budget for the last couple of years. "We have a balanced budget, and for the second year in a row there is a decrease in the village's property tax levy," Ottesen said. "There is a slight reduction in the budget and no new fees or taxes for residents." Ottesen did say there will be a minimal adjustment in the water rate, but Palatine still has the 49th lowest rate in the state, and is below average when compared to neighboring municipalities. The store at 1555 N. Rand Road opened in 2005 and has never sold alcohol. The Palatine village council voted Monday to grant the retailer a special use permit for package liquor sales of beer and wine.
The Palatine village council Monday unanimously approved a special use permit for Walmart, located 1555 N. Rand Road to begin selling packaged liquor. Sales of wine and beer can now occur only between the hours of 9 a.m. and midnight. From 6 a.m. [when the store opens] until 9 a.m., the area where liquor will be sold will be gated to restrict access to it. A newly created Class B-2 liquor license also was approved by the village council, and was added to the village alcoholic beverages code. It allows liquor sales at general merchandisers such as WalMart, and could include Target, though no official requests have been made.
