Mayor Jim Schwantz will start off tonight's Palatine Village Council meeting, by recognizing Immanuel Lutheran girls and boys basketball teams for being the 2013 Lutheran Sports Association, Illinois State Basketball Champions. A proclamation also will be made in honor of National Police Week, which is May 12-18. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15, National Peace Officer’s Day, and the week the date falls in as National Police Week. Oaths of office are planned at tonight's Palatine Village Council meeting for four incumbents, in addition to one new councilman who were elected in the April 9 election. And, retiring District 1 Councilman Aaron Del Mar will be formally recognized for his contributions to the Village of Palatine. Del Mar chose not to run again for his seat after serving one term. A liquor store will not be moving into the former J.J. Peppers convenience store location at 44 W. Illinois, after the Palatine Village Council Monday voted unanimously against a special use permit that would have allowed it. The petitioner, Bharatbhai Patel, managed J.J. Peppers for the last four years, and wanted to open a store called Palatine Liquors, that would have sold alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, ice cream and lottery tickets. The proposal for a special use permit was previously voted down by the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) by a 3-2 vote before coming before the village council for final consideration. A pinning ceremony was held at the Palatine Village Council meeting for six promotions, four new firefighters, a new fire marshal and chaplain.
The Palatine Village Council Monday meeting was the setting for a number of official pinning ceremonies that highlighted promotions and new faces within the Palatine Fire Department. “These men have challenged themselves to go above and beyond to become leaders in the future. The Palatine Village Council Monday approved a permit to allow resident Steven Brosio to have a chicken coop and house six hens, on his 1.8 acres of property at 624 W. Hill Road. The issue has been in question in Palatine since it was first proposed in the spring of 2012. In early January, Brosio received unanimous approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals relating to his request. Three Palatine residents, and two individuals who live nearby to Brosio in unincorporated Cook County spoke in favor of his petition at the village council meeting Monday. The Palatine Village Council approved an agreement aimed at providing protection against rising fuel costs.
The Palatine Village Council Monday voted to allow the village manager to purchase fuel in advance in an effort to save money on fuel costs. The village has historically explored different ways to purchase fuel at the best prices; they include fixed margin price contracts, forward purchase contracts and spot purchasing, according to a village memorandum. Village Manager Reid Ottesen said spot purchasing has proven the most successful in recent years, because it locks in prices that will last through the end of the year. Spot purchasing is when a volume of fuel is purchased in advance for use over a 12 month time frame. "This can provide us some security and help to stay in budget," Ottesen said. The village of Palatine will consider adding new activities to better engage young people ages 16-20 during Palatine Street Fest 2013.
In addition to approving the many details to allow planning for Palatine Street Fest 2013 to move forward, the Village of Palatine will consider the possibility of adding new activities and entertainment for attendees 16 to 20 years of age for this year's event. According to a village memo on the proposition, this age group tends to ‘congregate’ on the west side of the Street Fest parameters, and ideas on how to provide more events aimed at drawing them in have been explored over the last several years. The possibilities include adding a second and smaller stage in Lot 14, according to the memo, which is located north of Towne Square.
