The petitioner, who managed J.J. Peppers before they closed, wanted to open a liquor store in the strip mall at the intersection of Plum Grove and Illinois. The village council voted unanimously against the petition for a special use.

A liquor store will not be moving into the former J.J. Peppers convenience store location at 44 W. Illinois, after the Palatine Village Council Monday voted unanimously against a special use permit that would have allowed it.  The petitioner, Bharatbhai Patel, managed J.J. Peppers for the last four years, and wanted to open a store called Palatine Liquors, that would have sold alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, ice cream and lottery tickets. The proposal for a special use permit was previously voted down by the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) by a 3-2 vote before coming before the village council for final consideration.  Palatine Village Councilman Scott Lamerand said several residents gave testimony against the petition at the ZBA and …

How obtuse is Palatine? Let's see, I agree, keep the alcohol out of that area, and let Walmart sell beer and wine on a broader scale to many more customers than JJ Pepper!! Walmart required a new alcohol license, but Palatine didn't seem to mind to approve it, in "that section of town". After all, it's in an area of Palatine that has already approved 4 liquor licenses. I find that interesting, …   more ›

The Palatine Village Council Monday approved a permit to allow resident Steven Brosio to have a chicken coop and house six hens, on his 1.8 acres of property at 624 W. Hill Road. The issue has been in question in Palatine since it was first proposed in the spring of 2012.  In early January, Brosio received unanimous approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals relating to his request.  Three Palatine residents, and two individuals who live nearby to Brosio in unincorporated Cook County spoke in favor of his petition at the village council meeting Monday. Brosio sought an Accessory Unique Use Permit to allow the hens and the chicken coop on his property. None of the 19 individuals [from 11 households] who previously signed a petition against …

Palatine Approves Advanced Fuel Purchasing

The Palatine Village Council approved an agreement aimed at providing protection against rising fuel costs.

The Palatine Village Council Monday voted to allow the village manager to purchase fuel in advance in an effort to save money on fuel costs.  The village has historically explored different ways to purchase fuel at the best prices; they include fixed margin price contracts, forward purchase contracts and spot purchasing, according to a village memorandum.  Village Manager Reid Ottesen said spot purchasing has proven the most successful in recent years, because it locks in prices that will last through the end of the year.  Spot purchasing is when a volume of fuel is purchased in advance for use over a 12 month time frame.  "This can provide us some security and help to stay in budget," Ottesen said.  Fifty-percent of the fuel needs over …

How about a dance-off or kareoke? Or daytime activities like wheelbarrow, potato sack races, bags, etc. Kids should pre-register as a team and possibly even pay a small fee to enter. As far as music goes, probably just a DJ...or maybe a battle-of-the-bands.   more ›
