Palatine High School has named a successor to Tyler Donnelly, the former head football coach who stepped down after eight seasons leading the Palatine Pirates, according to a press release from District 211. Rick Splitt was given the new position Wednesday; he was previously an assistant varsity coach and also served as the Pirates defensive coordinator for the past six seasons. “Rick is a great fit for the job, and we’re really excited to have Rick leading our football program,” said Gary Steiger, Palatine High School principal, in the release. “He has been a part of Palatine football for the past 13 years. Palatine High School head football coach Tyler Donnelly resigned Wednesday. The Daily Herald is reporting that stress-related heart issues were behind the decision. The health issues are reportedly not life-threatening, and were the stimulus for Donnelly to leave the coaching position to spend more time with his wife and two children. Donnelly led Palatine to one its best seasons in recent history last year, guiding the Pirates to a 10-2 record. Palatine advanced to the state 8A quarterfinals where they lost a tough contest to Loyola. After working as an assistant coach, Donnelly took over the Pirates in 2005.
