Comcast has turned on more than 1,000 wi-fi hotspots throughout the Chicago suburbs as well as several hotspots throughout the McHenry County area. While the hotspots are meant to help Xfinity Wi-Fi customers connect more easily while on the go, the company will be running a promotion that allows anyone to use the hotspots from May 24 through July 4, according to the Chicago Tribune. Several local wi-fi hotspots can be found in Palatine with locations at 30 S. Northwest Highway, 139 N. Northwest Highway, 265 W. Northwest Highway, 210 N. Fremont St., 41 Wilson St. and 120 W. The Palatine Village Council denied a liquor license for the wife of a man, Muhammad Amjad, who was convicted of selling stolen alcohol and who has had his village liquor license revoked in the past because of that conviction, according to the Daily Herald. The village council believed Amjad was trying to skirt the village's requirements by "gifting" his store Quick Liquor, 2387 N. Hicks Road, to his wife, Sadia Amjad, who applied for the liquor license, according to the Daily Herald. Palatine village code does not allow liquor licenses to be issued to someone who has been convicted of "any federal or state law concerning the manufacture, possession or sale of liquor," according to the article. Special Spaces, a volunteer organization based in Naperville, transformed the room of six-year-old Kennedy Khalimsky.
Six-year-old Kennedy Khalimsky of Palatine has an "awesome" new Victorian-era princess bedroom thanks to the volunteer efforts of Special Speces, a suburban organization that gives bedroom makeovers to area children with life-threatening illnesses, according to the Daily Herald. Khalimsky was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2012 and has been confined to her bedroom during the treatments, according to the article. The Special Spaces projects are new to the area. Fremd and Palatine high schools competed at the state badminton tournament last weekend.
Local qualifying girls high school badminton teams competed last weekend for the state title. Locally, Fremd High School's badminton fared the best, tying with Naperville High School for a second place finish at the state tournament with 12 points, according to the Illinois High School Association website. Thornton Fractional South in Lansing won the state title with 16.5 points. Fremd's Angela Wu was among the top finishers in the singles badminton competition. She finished in sixth place overall. Fremd's Kelly Owens also competed in the singles competition, making it to the semifinals of the consolation bracket before being knocked out by Wu. Palatine High School stole the show at their sectional meet placing first overall.
Several Palatine High School girls track and field athletes will be headed to the state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston this Thursday through Saturday. The Palatine High School girl's track and field time placed first overall at their home sectional meet on May 10 with a total score of 116.5, according to preliminary results posted on the IHSA website. Finishing behind Palatine was Barrington High School, with a score of 74 points; and Warren Township High School, with a score of 66 points. Applebee's announced Tuesday it will close eight of its 33 Applebee's locations in the Chicago suburbs, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The Palatine Applebee's, at 741 E. Dundee Road, is among the Applebee's locations that will close, according to the Chicago Tribune. Applebee's announced Tuesday that the restaurant franchise was forced to close eight of its Chicago locations as it hopes to "reorganize its operations in Chapter 11 bankruptcy," according to the Chicgao Tribune. The Chicago Tribune reports Applebee's could close more restaurants. Applebee's did file a WARN notice with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Palatine's 3,200-meter men's relay team walked away from Saturday's Carlin Nalley Invitational with a school — and meet — record, according to the Daily Herald. The relay team of Christian Ambrano, Zach Stella, Graham Brown and Andrew Clingerman ran a combined time of 7 minutes, 50 seconds, breaking the school record of 7:50.80 and the meet record of 7:53.89, according to the Daily Herald.
