New Starbucks Plan Withdrawn—For Now

The petitioner still may reapply for the special use drive-thru permit at a future date.

Plans for a new Starbucks near the intersection of Northwest Highway and Smith Street have been withdrawn—at least for now. "We were notified last week that the petitioner was not ready to move forward at this point," said Ben Vyverberg, director of planning and zoning for Palatine, adding that the petitioner might reapply at a future date. An adapted proposal was slated to go before the Zoning Board of Appeals on March 27, after the village council rejected the proposal by a 4-3 vote in January. The plan garnered criticism from residents concerned about traffic and also from supporters of nearby Norma's Coffee Corner, 189 W. Northwest Highway. A project that has been rejected by the council can't be resubmitted for a year, unless the plan…

Starbucks Plan Returns To Palatine

A new plan for a Starbucks near the intersection of Smith Street and Northwest Highway will go before the Zoning Board of Appeals March 27.

New plans for a Starbucks near the intersection of Northwest Highway and Smith Street will go before the Zoning Board of Appeals on March 27. In January, the village council rejected the proposal by a 4-3 vote. The plan garnered criticism from residents concerned about traffic and also from supporters of nearby Norma's Coffee Corner, 189 W. Northwest Highway. A project that has been rejected by the council can't be resubmitted for a year, unless the plan has been changed. "We believe that there has been substantial enough change for it to move forward," Palatine Director of Planning and Zoning Ben Vyverberg said. The stripmall would be located between Harris Bank, 205 W. Northwest Highway, and McDonald's, 275 W. Northwest Highway. The …

Traffic will be worse with a new three business lot in that area, and at least two of those businesses will be owned by an immigrant that most likely got his money from the government, while there are plenty of locals who can't even get food stamps. Not because they don't deserve it, but because they can't prove they are poor. I agree with PalGal - that lot at Quentin needs help, and we don't …   more ›

Starbucks Still Considering Northwest HIghway Location, Drive-Thru

Starbucks is considering revising their plans and still locating near Smith Street and Northwest Highway.

New plans for a Starbucks with a drive-thru at Northwest Highway and Smith Street have been sent to Palatine village officials for comment. Earlier this month the Village Council voted 4-3 against the project. The plan garnered criticism from residents concerned about traffic and also from supporters of nearby Norma's Coffee Corner, 189 W. Northwest Highway. Several residents and council members specifically voiced concern about traffic flow and how the project would work in conjunction with McDonald's, 275 W. Northwest Highway. "They [petitioners] tried to address the concerns that were raised by a majority of council members," Palatine Village Manager Reid Ottesen said. "The news here is that they have not stopped looking at the site. …

Any vote for another Rte. 14 or Rand Rd. business is a vote against really making the village a center for retail and commerce. How long does Mia Cucina and other spaces have to sit empty before a concerted effort is made to market our town? It's a nice town. Rte. 14 doesn't run through it like it does all the other towns on the NW Pacific line. It could be a little enclave of prosperous retail, …   more ›

Palatine Rejects Starbucks Plan

The Palatine Village Council voted 4 to 3 against a plan for a Starbucks with a drive-thru near Northwest Highway and Smith Street.

Plans for a Starbucks drive-thru near Northwest Highway and Smith Street were rejected Tuesday by the Palatine Village Council. "It was purely safety," said District 6 Council member Brad Helms, referring to traffic conerns that were raised about the project. Although the vote rejected the drive-thru, Starbucks still could locate in the planned stripmall. Dean Klein, director of Global Development, said he did not know if Starbucks would go forward without a drive-thru. "The absence of a drive-thru makes this project less desirable," Klein said. "It would definitely detract from the appeal of this location." The vote was 4 to 3 with Palatine Mayor Jim Schwantz casting the deciding vote. The decision pleased supporters of Norma's Coffee …

Palatine To Consider Starbucks On Northwest Highway

The Palatine Village Council will vote on whether to approve a Starbucks in the 200 block of Northwest Highway.

The Palatine Village Council Monday will consider whether to approve a Starbucks on Northwest Highway near Smith Street. The Village Council will vote on the project during its Monday meeting at 7 p.m. at Village Hall, 200 E. Wood St. The Zoning Board of Appeals recommended approving the project last month, despite concerns about potential traffic problems that were raised by residents. The Starbucks would be located in new stripmall in the 200 block of Northwest Highway between Harris Bank and McDonald's. Although zoned for commercial businesses, the project needs a special use permit for a proposed drive-thru for Starbucks and because the other proposed tenant, Charley's Grilled Subs, is a restaurant. "To assume that you are going to …

There's a good idea ! It seems that the idea must be to put the business on the West side of the street so that it can take advantage of the morning rush hour traffic from the North - that's probably why the Quentin & NW Hwy location wouldn't work - Wrong side if the street - too inconvenient in & out. Something like the one they built in Barrington just South of Lake Cook Rd would work . . . …   more ›
