A forum on preventing football head injuries hosted by State Rep. Carole Sente will be held at Vernon Hills High School on Monday, Feb. 25.
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recently approved new rules for the 2013 football seaons in an effort to minimize player injuries related to helmets coming off during the game. As a follow-up to last year’s rules change requiring players to sit out one play if their helmet comes off while the ball is live, the NFHS Football Rules Committee approved three additional rules that are extensions of that change. An illegal personal contact foul was added to Rule 9-4-3 to state that “no player or nonplayer shall initiate contact with an opposing player whose helmet has come completely off.” “Player safety has been and will continue to be the top priority for members of the NFHS Football Rules Committee,” said Brad…

On Thanksgiving Day, the football team from the Best Sports City of All Time will take to the field. What?! The Bears are playing? Um, no. It seems the readers of the Sporting News voted Detroit the Best Sports City of All Time in a series of city vs. city votes, with Detroit notching a huge victory over Chicago, securing 81 percent of the vote to Chicago's 19 percent. We say Jerry Coglianese of Orland Park put it best in a comment on aol.SportingNews.com: "Detroit ahead of Chicago? I don't think so. I say there was some ballot box hanky panky. Former Fremd grad to play for NFL in San Diego.
Former Fremd and Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien made the jump to the NFL Tuesday, signing an undrafted free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers. “I am very excited," Tolzien said. "I am just taking it one day at a time and trying to make a roster.” Tolzien had been in limbo since the April NFL draft when he went undrafted. Usually, NFL teams line up to sign rookie free agents, but the lockout made that an impossibility.
