Income and party were two key factors driving the outcome of election contests from president to local referenda in the March 20 primary, according to a Post-Election Report for Suburban Cook County released Wednesday by Cook County Clerk David Orr. "Despite the low turnout, Republican voters made their mark this time around," Orr said in a news release. "The number of ballots cast for Republican candidates rose by 12 percent compared to the February 2008 Presidential Primary." Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Illinois voters made a choice at the polls Tuesday to change the leadership of the United States. "Elections are about choices," he said. Former Pennsylvania senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke to a packed theater of students and faculty at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights on Friday, ahead of Illinois’ primary on Tuesday. Santorum criticized President Barack Obama for dividing the country and said this was, perhaps, the most important election since 1860. The Illinois Republican primary should have a been a triumphant homecoming of sorts for the Santorum for President campaign. After all, the former Pennsylvania Senator briefly attended and graduated from Mundelein’s Carmel Catholic High School in north suburban Lake County. His chief Illinois backer is Al Salvi, a former state representative and failed U.S. Senate candidate who is not only a fellow Carmel graduate, but whose family’s wealthy trial lawyer fortune paid for the Carmel gymnasium that bears the Salvi name. Republican voters in suburban Cook County are coming out in larger numbers and represent a greater percentage of early voters for the March 20 Presidential Primary than four years ago, according to Clerk David Orr. During the first 10 days of Early Voting, 6,270 Republican voters participated – a 77 percent increase over the 2008 primary when 3,545 Republican ballots were cast at this stage in Early Voting, a press release from the clerk's office states. GOP voters represent 38.1 percent of total Early Voting participation to date. In 2008 after a week and a half of Early Voting, Republican voters represented 19.6 percent of all ballots cast. Republican Early Voting turnout is also up when compared with the 2010 Gubernatorial Primary. …
