IHSA Football: Should There Be An MSL Super Bowl?

The MSL hasn't crowned a football conference champ since the 1970s, is it time for a championship game to be put back on the schedule?

With the IHSA recently releasing the schedules for the 2011-2012 football campaign there is one noticeable difference compared to the other major sports that are played throughout the difficult Mid-Suburban League, no championship game. “It would be awesome to see (the game) and really cool for the league,” Barrington’s coach Joe Sanchez said of the East versus West match-up to decide the conference’s best team.  “There is such great competition on both sides (of the conference) and it would be really cool to have this culminating event.” Although the Broncos’ football team wouldn’t have played in the game last year (had the west division top spot slip through their fingertips when they were unable to win either of their final two games …

Fremd, Palatine Battle Cancer on Softball Diamond

Fremd beat Palatine 3-2 but the real fight was aimed at Cancer as both programs came together to "Strike Against Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma."

Friday's softball game between the Fremd Vikings and visiting Palatine Pirates was bigger than just another installment of the heated crosstown rivalry. Having come together with the rest of the Mid Suburban League to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness in years past, both programs decided this year would be different; it would be much more personal. Denny Lynch is the father-in-law of both Fremd head coach, Jim Weaver, and Palatine head coach, Jeff Manz. Lynch, who spent 32-years teaching and coaching at Rolling Meadows High School, was diagnosed ten years ago with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma; cancer of the lymphoid tissue, including the spleen and other organ's of the immune system. Friday's contest featured a raffle, bake sale and T-…

Slow Start Is No Worry For Confident Pirates

Palatine High School's boys' baseball team has the talent, leadership and drive to be successful in 2011; they just need to put it all together.

Despite early cancellations, temperatures often at or below freezing, and a 1-3 start, Palatine's varsity boys' baseball team remains unfazed. Even with the Pirates' slow start, the morale is high amongst a team that boasts a multitude of senior talent in its starting lineup. Ninth year Palatine head coach, Paul Belo, believes his kids have the pieces to be successful in 2011, even after dropping a 7-1 contest to the visiting Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers (1-1) Tuesday. "We know we have a good team and we know that we have a chance to be successful this spring," Belo said. "It's just a matter of putting things together and playing a complete game." It looked as if junior right-hander Kurt Becker was on his way to a complete game against…

Fremd Speech Team Enjoys Success, Camaraderie

Despite its size, Fremd High School's Speech/Individual Events team has used a family atmosphere to breed success and confident speakers throughout the season.

Each Saturday from October through February, students show up ready to play, however, there is no ball and there are no bleachers. At Fremd and other high schools around the Chicago area, students trade gym shoes and jerseys for suits and ties to compete in a collection of 14 different speaking events. "I make the comparison to track because people understand with track, that you have all of these different events that go together towards a team goal," said first year head coach, Katie Dau, a 2003 Fremd graduate and former speech participant. "Speech is the same way, except with speaking and acting events." From prose and poetry reading to drama, impromptu and original comedy, students have a wide variety of events to choose from, and with…
