IHSA Football: Should There Be An MSL Super Bowl?

The MSL hasn't crowned a football conference champ since the 1970s, is it time for a championship game to be put back on the schedule?

With the IHSA recently releasing the schedules for the 2011-2012 football campaign there is one noticeable difference compared to the other major sports that are played throughout the difficult Mid-Suburban League, no championship game. “It would be awesome to see (the game) and really cool for the league,” Barrington’s coach Joe Sanchez said of the East versus West match-up to decide the conference’s best team.  “There is such great competition on both sides (of the conference) and it would be really cool to have this culminating event.” Although the Broncos’ football team wouldn’t have played in the game last year (had the west division top spot slip through their fingertips when they were unable to win either of their final two games …

Schaumburg Saxons Outlast Fremd Vikings in Overtime

Fremd failed to avenge its December 9th loss to Schaumburg as the Saxons claimed a 60-55 overtime victory over the Vikings on Friday night in Palatine.

Despite an 18-7 third-quarter advantage which lead to an 11 point fourth-quarter lead, Fremd was unable to shut the door on Schaumburg Friday night in Palatine as the Saxons outlasted the Vikings, 60-55, in overtime. Fremd senior, Zach Monaghan, scored a game-high 19 points, but finished an uncharacteristic 5-of-10 from the free-throw line, which included missing the front end of two one-and-one opportunities late in the contest. "We don't give up. We never have," said Schaumburg head coach, Matt Walsh. "I thought we showed a lot of toughness, a lot of character and a lot of composure. We play some young kids and the ball hasn't bounded our way against some good teams but tonight we made it happen." Schaumburg (9-9) regained the lead with …

Lady Vikes Sweep Season Series With Hawks

Lead by juniors Jessi Wiedemann and Ashley McConnell, Fremd downed Hoffman Estates 43-38 on Tuesday night in Palatine for the team's sixth consecutive win.

The Lady Vikes bent but never folded against a bigger, more physical Hoffman Estates team Tuesday. Fremd (19-4, 7-0) downed the visiting Hawks 43-38, sweeping the season series between the MSL-West schools. "They're a good team, they're well coached, they're very physical, and we did just enough both times to beat them without great shooting," said head coach Dave Yates. "For some reason, our hot shooting nights have not come against them." Though the Vikings struggled with consistency on offense, they responded every time Hoffman made a run. Trailing by two points at halftime, the Hawks grabbed a 23-22 lead midway through the third quarter, which Fremd answered with a 7-2 spurt that gave the Lady Vikes a four point lead going into the …

Lady Vikes Win Fifth Straight on Senior Night

Fremd's Girls' Basketball team picked up its fifth consecutive victory on Friday night, downing rival Palatine 48-36 at home on senior night.

The stands were packed, the gym was decorated and the band played a victory tune for the Fremd Vikings (18-4, 6-0) as they downed crosstown rival Palatine 48-36 at home on senior night. "This is what you want on a night like this," said Fremd head coach, Dave Yates. "I'm extremely proud of this group of seniors - they've done everything we've asked and more this year. They're great leaders, they're fantastic kids, they're role models and they deserved this win tonight." Yates honored his group of six-seniors by starting five of them and calling timeout immediately after the Vikings won the opening tip to allow Bridget Kubis to replace classmate Mary Sorensen. "Not every team has the type of camaraderie this team has," the coach added. …

Boys Basketball: Malley's Late Heroics Powers Palatine

Egan Malley scored 15 points off the bench for the Pirates, who defeated Vernon Hills on the road, 49-44 Friday night.

Senior Egan Malley's three-pointer with 1:12 remaining gave Palatine its first lead since a 9-8 advantage in the first quarter, and the Pirates closed the game on an 8-0 run to tame the Cougars, 49-44, on Friday night in Vernon Hills. "I saw John [Millin] drive baseline, so when the ball moved down, I just tried to find an open spot," said Malley, who finished with a game-high 15 points. "He made a great pass and the shot fell." The Pirates (7-10), who scored just two points in the second quarter and trailed by as many as 11 in the third, slowly began to chip away, thanks in large part to junior, Tommy Hauert, who grabbed a team-high six rebounds and scored all of his 14-points in the second half. Vernon Hills (11-6) took its time, picking…

Vikings Hold On to Defeat Warriors

Fremd earned its third consecutive victory of 2011, defeating McHenry, 56-54, in non-conference action on Tuesday night in Palatine.

Zach Monaghan probably said it best: "Some feel better than others, but a win's a win." Though Monaghan called the game "sluggish," the South Dakota State-bound senior poured in a game-high 30 points, and for the second time this season, Fremd (11-6) defeated a visiting opponent from the Fox Valley, holding on to defeat McHenry 56-54 in Palatine Tuesday night. The Warriors (11-3), who were held scoreless for the first six minutes of the game and managed only four first-quarter points, saw three players (two starters) foul out while committing 26-turnovers to just 11 for the Vikings. The two teams traded baskets in the second quarter as the lead changed six-times, but Fremd finally grabbed control on a Joe Leaf (six-points, six-rebounds) …

Vikings Clip Hawks in MSL-West Showdown

A balanced scoring attack and huge second quarter pushed Fremd past Hoffman Estates, 56-42, in MSL-West play Friday night in Palatine.

Fremd senior, Zach Monaghan scored a game-high 18 points, and Quinton Brown and Jack Konopka added 15 each as Fremd  (10-6, 3-1) downed Hoffman Estates, 56-42, in MSL-West action Friday night in Palatine.   "We've been looking for more balance since the Christmas break and we're starting to find that," said Vikings head coach, Bob Widlowski. "We were really pleased with our balanced scoring and I thought we were solid defensively."   After falling behind, 6-0, the Vikings regrouped and took their first lead of the game with just over a minute to play in the first quarter, though the Hawks would end the period with an 11-10 advantage.   In the second, however, it was all Vikings.   Lead by 10-points from Brown, Fremd used an 18-1 run to  …
