Inverness Family Still Mourns Hunting Accident Victim, Wants Tougher Laws

Monday marks the one year anniversary of the hunting accident that killed John Hanlon, 44, of Inverness. The man who killed him was sentenced to two years probation and work release, and the family is outraged.

“There’s certainly going to be lot of tears and heartache,” Leslie Hanlon said as she began to cry, “We just really miss him.” Today, marks the one-year anniversary of the fatal hunting accident that took the life her husband, John Hanlon, of Inverness.  On a hunting trip with his eldest son in East Dubuque, the 44-year-old father of four, was killed by a single gunshot wound to the chest November 19, 2011. “That date, it’s hard to think about,” Hanlon said as she held back tears, “It’s just so hard to get through because I can’t take their pain away.”  The mother of a girl and three boys ranging in age from 9 to 16 years, Hanlon said her family is doing their best to move forward. “That’s what John would want us to do,” Hanlon said, “But …

Inverness Man Killed In Hunting Accident

John P. Hanlon, 44, of Inverness, was killed in a hunting accident Saturday in Jo Daviess County.

UPDATED: 10:11 A.M. Wednesday, Nov. 22 An Inverness man died in a hunting accident Saturday, Nov. 19. John P. Hanlon, 44, of Inverness, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest at about 5:30 a.m., the newspaper reported. The incident occured in Jo Daviess County near the intersection of U. S. Route 20 and Dunn Road in rural East Dubuque, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Department told the Telegraph Herald. Hanlon's 15-year old son was injured by the same bullet. Hanlon was shot by Kelly Jackson, 53, of East Dubuque. The men were not together and were part of separate hunting parties, said Stacey Solano, spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Tragic accident. I just don't understand the pleasure of hunting. Killing poor defenseless animals in their natural habitat. I think deer are beautiful creatures. I have family members that love hunting and when they talk about how many deer they killed on their hunt and who got the biggest one, it upsets me. It takes all my willpower to keep my comments to myself!!!   more ›
