U.S. Rep Jesse Jackson Jr. has relinquished his seat representing the 2nd Congressional District, the Chicago Tribune reports. Jackson resigned Wednesday afternoon in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner. A spokesman for Boehner confirmed receiving the letter, but would not expound on its contents, NBC reports. Jackson, 47, is currently the subject of a federal investigation into his campaign spending. Several media outlets have reported that Jackson is in plea deal talks that could include jail time and resignation from the congressional seat he has held for nearly 18 years.
