Evanston Police: Man Duct-Taped Couple, Stole Paintings Stolen paintings found in a Morton Grove consignment shop led Evanston detectives to arrest and charge a Glenview man in connection with a home invasion that took place in Evanston in April 2012.  Michael Karabatsis, 51, of the 600 block of Pfingsten Road in Glenview, was arrested and charged with home invasion, a felony, on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  Police believe Karabatsis was one of three men who knocked on the door of a home in the 2200 block of Central Street on Friday, April 13, claiming they had a delivery. Regional Police Report: Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run, Man Pleads Not Guilty in Murder, Pot Seized

Skokie Skokie Man Charged in Fatal Hit-and-Run Skokie resident Kristian Hernandez, 36, of the 8200 block of Knox Avenue, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident resulting in a death, a Class I felony, authorities said Friday. Patch reported on Nov. 6 that 53-year-old Park Ridge resident Ronald Bougan was found dead near Axehead Lake on Touhy Avenue, just east of the I-294 expressway in Des Plaines, on Nov. 5. A man riding his bicycle found Bougan in a grassy area and initially, in the dark, thought he was looking at a deer or other animal, authorities said. Buffalo Grove Two Former Police Officers Charged in Murder, Extortion Plot A Buffalo Grove resident was one of two former police officers charged Oct. 26 with attempted extortion and conspiracy to commit extortion. Federal investigators said Steven Mandell, 61, was involved in an alleged plot to abduct, extort, murder and dismember a victim whom he believed had access to large amounts of cash generated from commercial real estate holdings. Also charged was Gary Engel, 61, of Homer Glen. The two were arrested Thursday following an undercover FBI investigation during which the intended victim, who was not identified, was never exposed to any immediate danger, authorities said in a statement.
