Hi there! I’m Duke, and I’m one handsome guy! I’m a 10 to 12-year-old lab mix with a very sweet disposition and gentle demeanor. My owner passed away and like many of my senior friends in the same situation, I ended up at a noisy rural pound. Young at Heart Pet Rescue saved me from being euthanized, and I’m ready to begin the next part of my life! Now some people don’t know that adopting a senior pet is one of the most rewarding things a person can do. And I am just the guy to prove that to you! I’m a quiet boy, and I ride very nicely in the car. I take treats very gently, am good on a leash and love to go for walks! I am completely housebroken and trustworthy in the house. Hi there! I’m Lady Bug, and I am a very good girl. I’m a 9 year old collie/lab mix, and I lost my home when my family was forced to move into public housing, and though they tried to sneak me in, I got evicted. At the pound, I was so upset; I tried to chew my way out of the kennels. When Young at Heart took me in, I was so happy! When I arrived at my foster home! I found the fluffiest bed and took the world’s longest dog nap. I was exhausted! I have proved to be a very good dog since day one. Now that I know I’m safe in a home again, I don’t chew anything but bones and toys! I’m completely trustworthy and housebroken, I’m good with other dogs as long as I’m introduced to them slowly, and am totally fine with cats. I love my fluffy canine …

Hello, I am Kia! If you’re looking for a pretty dog, take a look at me. I'm about 10 years old, a beagle/Brittany spaniel mix. I am small and slender, under 30 pounds. I'm so sweet and friendly! I was found as a stray in Southern Illinois, but it is obvious that I was someone’s cherished pet. But no tags, no chip and no one came to claim me at the pound. Luckily I was rescued because, at my age, time would have run out quickly. At the shelter, I tried to convince the volunteers to let me get into any car that pulled up. Since I like cars so much, that’s how I got my new name, Kia! I am VERY mellow and so far have not made even a peep of noise. It’s possible that I don't hear well, but I function just fine. Well, hello there! Allow me to introduce myself, as a well-mannered lady should! My name is Scrappy, and though my name may sound feisty, I am anything but! I am a very sophisticated and lovely 10-year-old young lady, and am a joy for anyone to be around. I am a perfect guest in the house, housebroken and trustworthy, and I know that manners are important for other things, too! For example, I only pull on the leash when a squirrel is present (as you need protecting from those pesky critters!), and if you offer me a treat or morsel, I take it oh-so-gently from your fingers. The great thing about adopting an older gal like me is that I’ve learned a lot of new tricks along the way, and I love to show them off for you! One look at me, and you can’t help but smile. Tucked into the crook of my foster mom’s arm, I’m quite comfortable and relaxed. I’m Manny, an 8 year-old silver and tan Yorkipoo (Yorkshire Terrier mixed with Poodle), and I am happiest when I am right by your side. I’m a goofy little guy, which you may gather from my giant toothless doggy grin in my photos. My recent dental cleaning found that the last eleven teeth I had remaining were far from healthy, so out they went! It doesn’t bother me a bit, as now I can eat my soft dog food without any pain, and I still enjoy chewing on plush dog toys. Young at Heart Pet Rescue is planning to save more than a dozen dogs and cats today.
Old dogs really can learn new tricks. Old cats too. That’s the philosophy of Dawn Kemper, who is the Executive Director of Young at Heart Pet Rescue, a nonprofit organization that rescues and rehomes dogs and cats over the age of five. “They absolutely can,” Kemper said. “Age is just a number.” Kemper and her group are making a big push Monday, June 20. Young at Heart will save more than a dozen dogs and cats at the Animal Welfare League in Chicago. Because of their age, those dogs and cats have been slated for euthanasia. “It is our biggest rescue ever,” Kemper said. “Our current foster families have agreed to take in extra pets. Lovable escape artist seeks home with secure yard and no dog crates.
Hi there! I’m Tucker, a 10-year-old Great Pyrenees mix who’s a terrific example of the “Gentle Giant.” If you asked a child to draw a picture of a dog, they’d probably draw one that looks a lot like me, with the traditional floppy ears and symmetrical markings that make me a handsome “every dog.” Me, I’m nonplussed by my good looks. I just concentrate on being a super-sweet, super-cool dude. I love meeting new people. With just one “hello,” you’ll see that I’m quite the passionate kisser.
