The Classroom Teachers' Council grievance filed regarding the decision to instate an early release on Fridays for teacher development time is now headed to arbitration, according to the Journal and Topics.
The recent decision by the District 15 school board to instate an early release on Fridays will now go to an arbitrator to determine if the contract with the Classroom Teachers' Council (CTC) has been violated, the Journal and Topics reports. District 15 Superintendent Scott Thompson said the date for the hearing with the American Arbitration Association has not yet been set, according to the Journal and Topics, and added that after the hearing occurs, it could take up to 90 days for a ruling on the issue. The District 15 school board held a special meeting on Friday, May 3, to make a decision on the issue that has loomed since December of 2012 when the idea was first introduced. District 15 parent Lisa Szczupaj said at the meeting, "…

On Friday, the District 15 board approved an early release on Fridays to allocate development time for teachers. Despite a grievance filed by the teachers' union, the board stood behind its decision Wednesday.
The Classroom Teachers' Council (CTC) recently filed a grievance against District 15, according to the Journal and Topics, relating to the school board's decision on Friday, May 3, to instate an early release on Fridays to allow for teacher development time. At the school board meeting Wednesday, newly elected Board President Peggy Babcock told those in attendance the board has no plans to reverse the decision and will stand behind it, despite the grievance being filed, according to Gerard Iannuzzelli, District 15 board member. The grievance process first requires both sides sit down with a grievance office, said Manjula Sriram, District 15 board member, and if they cannot reach an agreement, an arbitrator would be utilized. "If an …

Though projected savings have now increased to $1.5 million if D15 outsources bus services, Superintendent Scott Thompson says the highest safety standards for students is paramount, and outsourcing is only one option.
Though the gap between projected cost savings estimated by District 15 and the DTU continues to grow, the school district is hopeful that future negotiations with the bus driver’s union will be productive in the way of safety standards. At the school board meeting Wednesday, Durham Bus Services presented their bid to the school board. According to Superintendent Scott Thompson, savings by outsourcing which were previously estimated at $1.3 million over three years, have now risen to $1.5 million. “We’re doing our best in the way that we are calculating our numbers; the Illinois State Board of Education is providing us with information on what expenses are reimbursable,” Thompson said. Thompson added that the goal is still to sit down and…

D15 Superintendent Scott Thompson answers to a recent statement made by the District 15 Transportation Union regarding the hit-and-run bus accident Monday, and the driver’s training and subsequent termination.
District 15 Superintendent Scott Thompson and the District 15 Transportation Union agree on one thing; terminating the probationary employment of the bus driver involved in a hit-and-run accident Monday was the right step to take. Both sides also agree that there was no excuse for the driver’s failure to immediately report the incident as safety protocol in District 15 dictates. “Protocol is that drivers are told to call in accidents whenever students are on the bus, to call police and a school district nurse will go to the scene to check the children for injuries,” Thompson said. “That did not happen, the driver did not follow protocol.” The DTU also said in their statement that the driver’s failure to report the accident is without …
The bus driver involved in a hit-and-run accident has been terminated, according to the DTU, who says they support the action toward the probationary driver, and who previously worked for an outsourcing company and was not trained in-district.
According to the District 15 Transportation Union, the bus driver involved in a hit-and-run accident Monday has been terminated. Below is a statement from the DTU: The District 15 Transportation Union is fully committed to the safety of our students. As such, we fully support the termination of the probationary driver who hit a vehicle on April 8, 2013. The probationary driver’s failure to report the accident is without excuse. Only today, the Union discovered several things: The probationary driver was trained by and was hired from an outsourced bus company. Even though the probationary driver had worked in the District less than three weeks, this was not his first accident. The same driver who was involved in yesterday’s …
On Monday morning, a bus driver backed into a car and continued onto Plum Grove Junior High without stopping at the scene. Two students complained of pain, and parents say they were not notified about the accident.
UPDATED: Tuesday, April 9 at 7:20 p.m. A District 15 bus driver was involved in a hit-and-run accident Monday morning near Euclid and Parkside Drive on Palatine's west end. Commander Kurt Schroeder said the bus driver was a 44-year-old man from Elgin. The incident occurred at 7:49 a.m. Monday and the bus was southbound on Parkside Drive at a stop sign at Euclid when he realized he was sticking out too far, Schroeder said. When the driver reversed to avoid oncoming traffic on Euclid, he struck a 2012 Hyundai Elantra, driven by a 59-year-old Palatine woman who was behind the bus. The bus driver did not stop, and instead continued on to Plum Grove Jr. High while the driver in the Elantra followed. When the bus arrived at the school, …
A presentation planned for Wednesday's school board meeting shows $1.3 million in savings if the district outsources; DTU says D15 is incorrect, and they will use 'every legal option available' if outsourcing is utilized.
At Wednesday's school board meeting, a presentation is planned that, according to District 15, shows outsourcing bus services will save the school district $1.3 million over the next three years. The presentation, to be given by Mike Adamczyk, assistant superintendent for business and auxiliary services, shows reimbursements are heavily relied upon whether they are reported for in-house busing or outsourcing, each year between $5 and $6 million is estimated as reimbursable costs. In each of the scenarios, reimbursement figures are higher for outsourcing than they are for in-house transportation. The information also shows that savings will incrementally rise if the school district utilizes outsourced busing: District 15 Transportation …
