The Classroom Teachers' Council grievance filed regarding the decision to instate an early release on Fridays for teacher development time is now headed to arbitration, according to the Journal and Topics.
The recent decision by the District 15 school board to instate an early release on Fridays will now go to an arbitrator to determine if the contract with the Classroom Teachers' Council (CTC) has been violated, the Journal and Topics reports. District 15 Superintendent Scott Thompson said the date for the hearing with the American Arbitration Association has not yet been set, according to the Journal and Topics, and added that after the hearing occurs, it could take up to 90 days for a ruling on the issue. On Friday, the District 15 board approved an early release on Fridays to allocate development time for teachers. Despite a grievance filed by the teachers' union, the board stood behind its decision Wednesday.
The Classroom Teachers' Council (CTC) recently filed a grievance against District 15, according to the Journal and Topics, relating to the school board's decision on Friday, May 3, to instate an early release on Fridays to allow for teacher development time. At the school board meeting Wednesday, newly elected Board President Peggy Babcock told those in attendance the board has no plans to reverse the decision and will stand behind it, despite the grievance being filed, according to Gerard Iannuzzelli, District 15 board member. A 35 year-old bus driver for District 15 voluntarily left her job after it was determined she had alcohol in her system while on the job the morning of February 15, the Daily Herald reports.

A District 15 bus driver resigned after alcohol was found in her system; an individual alerted the school district on February 15 stating the driver was possibly unsafe, the Daily Herald reports. The 35-year-old Rolling Meadows woman was not criminally charged, the Daily Herald reports. She was hired in 2009, and her bus driver's permit has been suspended for three years due to the state's zero tolerance for bus drivers.

Twenty-nine students will advance to the Illinois Junior Academy of Science's exposition to be held on Saturday, May 4 in Urbana-Champaign. An addition 39 students were honored for their work.
Twenty junior high students from District 15 have advanced to the Illinois Junior Academy of Science’s (IJAS) 2013 State Science Exposition, which will be held Saturday, May 4, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Those 20 students qualified to participate in the State Science Exposition after competing in the IJAS Region 6 Science and Engineering Fair, held Saturday, March 9, at Niles North High School. Though projected savings have now increased to $1.5 million if D15 outsources bus services, Superintendent Scott Thompson says the highest safety standards for students is paramount, and outsourcing is only one option.
Though the gap between projected cost savings estimated by District 15 and the DTU continues to grow, the school district is hopeful that future negotiations with the bus driver’s union will be productive in the way of safety standards. At the school board meeting Wednesday, Durham Bus Services presented their bid to the school board. D15 Superintendent Scott Thompson answers to a recent statement made by the District 15 Transportation Union regarding the hit-and-run bus accident Monday, and the driver’s training and subsequent termination.
District 15 Superintendent Scott Thompson and the District 15 Transportation Union agree on one thing; terminating the probationary employment of the bus driver involved in a hit-and-run accident Monday was the right step to take. Commander Kurt Schroeder said the bus driver was a 44-year-old man from Elgin. The incident occurred at 7:49 a.m. Monday and the bus was southbound on Parkside Drive at a stop sign at Euclid when he realized he was sticking out too far, Schroeder said. At Wednesday's school board meeting, a presentation is planned that, according to District 15, shows outsourcing bus services will save the school district $1.3 million over the next three years. The presentation, to be given by Mike Adamczyk, assistant superintendent for business and auxiliary services, shows reimbursements are heavily relied upon whether they are reported for in-house busing or outsourcing, each year between $5 and $6 million is estimated as reimbursable costs. In each of the scenarios, reimbursement figures are higher for outsourcing than they are for in-house transportation.
