Pirates capture 3A state title.
The Palatine Pirates won the 3A state cross country title held at Detweiller Park in downstate Peoria Saturday, Nov. 5 with 114 team points. The Pirates edged O’Fallon High School by 6 points. Palatine, ranked number one in the state all season, got some redemption over third place Neuqua Valley (144) which was the only team to beat the Pirates during the regular season. Of the more than 200 state qualifiers for the 3A state meet, Palatine had four runners finish in the top 25 and five runners finish in the top 50 en route to their state crown. Senior Peter Tomkiewicz led the Pirates to this year’s title with his 11th place (14:43) finish, just ahead of fellow senior Anthony Gregorio’s (14:55) 18th place. Despite the strong start …
The Lady Pirates take tenth at state meet.
A tenth place finish at the 3A state meet held in Peoria at Detweiller Park is a very good way to end the season but as a member of Palatine’s first place finish in 2009 and second place finish last year, junior runner Tess Wasowicz was left with a bit of disappointment. “I have realized that not every single season can go perfect which is difficult to accept after coming off of teams the past two years that have placed 21st and 8th at Nationals,” Wasowicz said. The Lady Pirates found themselves in the unfortunate situation of chasing all day as they were down early in the meet to first place finisher Winnetka. Palatine finished the state meet with 270 team points good for tenth place and a state medal but New Trier impressively had …
The boys and girls teams from Immanuel Lutheran won the National Lutheran Cross Country championship.
Immanuel Lutheran School in Palatine won the boys and girls first-ever National Lutheran School Cross Country championships Oct. 23. "It was a tremendous day for our Immanuel runners," said Ken Heinrich, head coach for both teams. "However, the real story was matching prayer and Scripture with a great athletic competition. Our boys' team was praying and nearly missed the start of the race. They went from prayer to the equivalent of a 10-round fight in less than a minute." Concordia University-Wisconsin, in Mequon, Wisc. hosted the event. Immanuel Lutheran had previously won the Illinois Lutheran Sports Association state championships on Oct. 16 in Bloomington. At the national meet, 156 runners representing 27 Lutheran schools competed on …
Pirates girls and boys cross country defended their turf and grabbed top-three finishes Saturday
Saturday was a big day for Palatine cross country. On their home turf, against some of the state's top teams, the Pirates girls and boys both placed in the top three as hosts of the Palatine Invitational at Deer Grove Forest Preserve. The Pirates were the toast of the girls meet, placing two runners—senior Courtney Brown and sophomore Tess Wasowicz—in the top five individually and taking first place as a team. Brown finished the three-mile race second with a time of 17:26.6 before Wasowicz crossed the line at 17:41.0. The boys finished third, led by an eighth-place run by junior Anthony Gregorio (15:04.2) and three other runners in the top 35. Seniors A.J. Laskowkse (15:21.7) and Reuben Frey (15:24.9) finished 21st and 28th respectively, …
