An unknown fraction of 1,500 people were sent someone else's voter information due to a clerical error at the Cook County Clerk's office. The Clerk's office says the information is incomplete and harmless.
In the course of registering people to vote, the Cook County Clerk's Office mistakenly mailed some personal information to the wrong people. A clerical error affected an unknown number among the 1,500 people who tried registering to vote online, according to Courtney Greve, spokeswoman for Cook County Clerk David Orr. She stressed the information sent in error was not complete and should not pose a risk of identity theft. The State Board of Elections offered online voter registration this year. But to complete the online registration, people had to mail in a signature. The online program was popular and successful, but about 1,500 people never mailed their completed form, Greve said. Unofficial township- and precinct-level results for the March 20, 2012 Presidential Primary Election in suburban Cook County can now be viewed online at cookcountyclerk.com. Select "view" from the Online Results column. Please note the download feature now allows you to get a Excel document with precinct and township data by race. Up to 3,600 late-arriving mail ballots are eligible to be counted if they were postmarked by March 19 and received by April 3, according to state statute. There are also up to 1,028 provisional ballots that will be counted if validated, a process that will begin tomorrow. For the first time in a Presidential Primary Election, all voters in Illinois may request a mail ballot to cast their vote, Clerk David Orr stated in a press release. "In the past, you needed an absentee excuse to vote by mail," Orr stated. "All voters are now eligible for a mail ballot, bringing one more convenient option for participating in the democratic process." With less than a week before registration closes, Clerk David Orr reminds Cook County residents who want to vote in the March 20, 2012 Presidential Primary Election to register by the Feb. 21 deadline. As of today, there are 1,385,935 registered voters in suburban Cook County. "The number of suburban Cook County voters is comparable to the 2008 Presidential Primary Election, but about 50,000 less than the 2008 Presidential General Election," Orr stated in a press release. The Cook County Clerk's office issued its first civil union licenses Wednesday. About 75 couples were in line when the clerk's office in Chicago opened at 7:30 a.m. "This is a day long in the making. Congratulations to the happy couples," Cook County Clerk David Orr said in a press release from his office. Cook County reported that 203 couples had obtained licenses at the downtown office, with dozens of couples receiving licenses at the clerk's five suburban offices including Rolling Meadows. The legislation allowing for civil unions in Illinois was signed by Gov.Pat Quinn in January.
