President Barack Obama proposed Tuesday night a "Fix It First" program to address the nation's crumbling infrastructure—like roads and bridges—in an effort to improve citizens' quality of life and bring jobs to the United States. There are nearly 70,000 "structurally deficient" bridges throughout the United States that require "significant maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement," according to the Transportation for America website. January is National Mentoring Month and also marks the 25th anniversary of the holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King envisioned an America in which citizens work together in a non-violent effort to achieve a more just society. This month and the national holiday to honor his memory and life’s work is an ideal opportunity to get involved by becoming a mentor to a young person. That website is wrong. The Route 62 bridge over Salt Creek was just replaced last summer. The fact that it is still listed there is a bit of an oversight and clearly means that the information is at least a year old. How many bridges have become deficient and how many (though probably fewer) have been repaired/rebuilt in that time?   more ›
