Angelina Jolie Undergoes Preventative Double Mastectomy

Jolie announced Tuesday she underwent a double mastectomy to prevent her chances of breast cancer. Her likelihood of developing the cancer was at 87 percent. Tell us what you think about Jolie's decision and announcement in the comments section.

Actress and director Angelina Jolie announced today in a New York Times op-ed piece that she recently underwent a double mastectomy to cut her chances of developing breast cancer.  Jolie wrote she decided to take a blood test since she was at a higher risk of breast cancer — her mother fought the disease for almost a decade before dying at age 56 — and because she wanted to make sure she would be there for her children, according to her New York Times column.  Jolie said she carries a "faulty" gene, BRCA1, which raised her risk of developing breast cancer to 87 percent, according to the Associated Press. After having the double mastectomy, her chances of developing breast cancer dropped to five percent, according to the Associated Press.  …

Local Breast Cancer Survivor Shares Her Transformative Experience

Imagine being diagnosed with breast cancer during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The irony was not lost on survivor Marianne Kramer, who shares her story in a Patch Q&A.

A Grayslake Patch profile of breast cancer survivor Marianne Kramer, 43, of Round Lake. When and how were you diagnosed with breast cancer? I was officially diagnosed on Oct. 5, 2011, at 42. It’s not exactly easy being diagnosed during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, since not only is on your mind constantly, it is then everywhere you turn as well! A year later, it is much easier to take. I actually found the lump in my right breast during a self-exam. At the time, I was actually in the best physical shape I had been in, in about 15 years. Play in Pink to Fight Breast Cancer

Pink Out Sand Volleyball Tournament in Palatine benefits the American Cancer Society Saturday.

Play in the Pink Out Sand Volleyball Tournament in Palatine to raise money for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk Run. The tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Twin Lakes Recreation Area at 1200 E. Twin Lakes Drive in Palatine.  Spaces are still available to participate in the Pink Out Sand Volleyball Tournament that includes three brackets of doubles teams; men's, women's and a coed bracket. Sarah Fader, by a volunteer for the American Cancer Society organized the tournament. Fader said, “It is not only rewarding but having lost multiple grandparents to cancer I know I am doing my part to ensure that a cure is found.” All playing levels are welcome and if you can't make it out for the event you can still …

Sunday, May 22, Durty Nellie’s Pub hosts the third annual Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the cure fundraiser show. The event features raffle prizes and sixties rock n roll review band Generation: The Sixties Experience. The show begins at 5 p.m. Cary resident Mike Pierce realized the Durty Nellie’s event to benefit Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation after losing his sister to a thirty-year-battle with breast cancer four years ago. At that time, Pierce also commenced participation in a number of breast cancer fundraising activities, including annual 3-day, 60-mile walks, various runs and generating information on websites. “The [annual 60-mile walk] is one of the hardest things mentally and physically I’ve ever done in my life,” Pierce said…
