The Illinois 8th District candidate asks his opponent, Tammy Duckworth, to do the same.
Congressman Joe Walsh announced Thursday he will not attend the Republican National Convention in Tampa Bay in August, according to a news release from his campaign. Instead, the 8th district Republican candidate will host a series of town hall meetings and listening events in the district. "Rather than mingle with Party insiders in Tampa, I will be in the 8th district to continue to serve as an independent voice for for the people," Walsh said in a statement. In addition, Walsh asked his opponent, Tammy Duckworth, to join him in skipping the Democratic convention in Charlotte and instead hold joint town halls. Tammy Duckworth said she's ready to take on Joe Walsh for the 8th Congressional district seat. Duckworth spoke to supporters after getting a call from Raja Krishnamoorthi conceding the race. "Raja was extremely gracious in congratulating me on my victory. We congratulate him for the great campaign that shows what a postive Democratic primary can be," she said. Duckworth thanked her supporters and spoke of the differences between her and incumbent Congressman and Tea Party member Joe Walsh. Several Democratic Party organizations held a State of the Union party at Durty Nellie's Tuesday, Jan. 25.
A crowd of about 150 filled Durty Nellie's Tuesday night. Unlike most evenings the attraction was not a rock band, but President Barack Obama's State of the Union address. The crowd watched the address on huge screens and cheered when the the speech struck a chord. The State of the Union party was sponsored by several Democratic organizations. "I liked that the tone wasn't partisan," said 50-year-old Palatine resident Merri Bizjack. "I consider myself a centrist. I wish people would see that that's who he is. He is very practical and pragmatic." Obama began by addressing the shooting in Tuscon, Ariz., in which six people were killed and 13 injured.
