Palatine and Fremd High Schools competed at the Buffalo Grove 3A Track and Field sectional Thursday, May 16. Fremd's Kevin Winberg and Palatine's Adam Poklop each qualified for state in the high jump with jumps of six feet five inches (Winberg's qualifying jump is the second video in the gallery). Palatine's Cam Kuksa also earned a trip to state with a win in the triple jump. Kuksa also will go to state in the 110 meter hurdlers. Kuksa finished second to Fremd's Matt Konopka. Konopka also won the 300 meter hurdles with Fremd's Josh Yamamoto also qualifying for state with a third-place finish. Fremd and Palatine high schools competed at the state badminton tournament last weekend.
Local qualifying girls high school badminton teams competed last weekend for the state title. Locally, Fremd High School's badminton fared the best, tying with Naperville High School for a second place finish at the state tournament with 12 points, according to the Illinois High School Association website. Thornton Fractional South in Lansing won the state title with 16.5 points. Fremd's Angela Wu was among the top finishers in the singles badminton competition. She finished in sixth place overall. Fremd's Kelly Owens also competed in the singles competition, making it to the semifinals of the consolation bracket before being knocked out by Wu. Palatine High School stole the show at their sectional meet placing first overall.
Several Palatine High School girls track and field athletes will be headed to the state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston this Thursday through Saturday. The Palatine High School girl's track and field time placed first overall at their home sectional meet on May 10 with a total score of 116.5, according to preliminary results posted on the IHSA website. Finishing behind Palatine was Barrington High School, with a score of 74 points; and Warren Township High School, with a score of 66 points. Fremd High School also competed at the Palatine sectional but no Fremd students qualified for the state meet, according to the preliminary results on the IHSA website. Patton came home with a first place finish in the pommel horse and an 11th place finish in the all-around finals.
Fremd High School's C.J. Patton took home a first place finish at the state gymnastics's meet this past weekend at Lincoln-Way East High School Frankfurt. C.J. Patton, a senior at Fremd, finished first in the pommel horse with a final score of 9.550 and also received a medal in the all-around finals, finishing in 11th place with a final score of 51.750, according to the Illinois High School Association website. Patton also placed 11th in the prelims for the floor exercise, 48th in the prelims for the still rings, 26th in the prelims for vault, 22nd in the prelims for the parallel bars and 17th in the prelims for the horizontal bars. The Illinois High School Association approved new safety rules Wednesday to limit tackling in youth football practice in an effort to reduce head injuries, reported the Daily Herald. In March, a controversial bill sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) proposing to limit the number of days players could have full contact hitting practice (once a week) failed in the House committee. The new IHSA policy calls for coaches to gradually increase the time players can participate in preseason practice, along with the number of protective pads they can wear. On the seventh day of practice, players can participate in five hours of full contact drills wearing full pads, according to the IHSA. However, no single practice can exceed …

Palatine's 3,200-meter men's relay team walked away from Saturday's Carlin Nalley Invitational with a school — and meet — record, according to the Daily Herald. The relay team of Christian Ambrano, Zach Stella, Graham Brown and Andrew Clingerman ran a combined time of 7 minutes, 50 seconds, breaking the school record of 7:50.80 and the meet record of 7:53.89, according to the Daily Herald.
