Kirk, Durbin Schneider Tour New School as Sequester Removes Shine

Sen. Kirk and Sen. Durbin make first joint appearance in state at Great Lakes school along with Rep. Schneider.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield) made their first joint public appearance in Illinois since Kirk returned to full time duty in the Senate in January at a Great Lakes charter school they helped create which is now being hurt by the Sequester. Durbin, Kirk and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) met with students at the Learn Public Charter School, a North Chicago public school on the Great Lakes Naval Base, to see the new institution and listen to the students. “This is our first public appearance in Illinois since Sen. Kirk returned to the Senate (in January after suffering a stroke a year before),” Durbin said. “We wanted it to be here because it is something we worked on together.” Sequester Reduces …

Palatine Sister City Relationship is Going Strong

The sister city relationship between Palatine and Fontenay-le-Comte, France, has added a new dimension that may in fact cement the two cities’ relationship for generations to come.

The sister city relationship between Palatine and Fontenay-le-Comte, France, has added a new dimension that may in fact cement the two cities’ relationship for generations to come. For the past week and for the next two weeks, 11-year-old Maelle Fourage of Fontenay has been living in Palatine with local families and attending Quest Academy. In return, Maelle and her family will soon host her two Palatine “sisters” in Fontenay. The girl's father is the mayor of Fontenay.  The driving force between this exchange, which given the young age of the participants is most unique, is the Palatine-Fontenay Sister City organization. “This is the kind of experience that allows all of us to put into practice the idea of cultural exchanges between …

District 15 Board Approves Early Release Friday

After five months of public forums, surveys and input from parents, the board voted 4-1, with 1 abstention, to instate early release on Friday to allow for teacher development time.

During what was - at times - a tense meeting Friday night at Sundling Jr. High School, the District 15 school board ultimately voted in favor of instating an 'early release' for students on Friday afternoons starting in the next school year, to allow for teacher development time.  The vote was by no means, clear-cut. Board members Tim Millar, Scott Herr, Manjula Sriram and Gerard Iannuzzelli voted for early release, while Richard Bokor voted against it. Peggy Babcock abstained from voting. David Seiffert did not attend the meeeting; Millar said Seiffert was out of the country and unable to participate in the meeting.   "I still have many questions; more than answers," said Babcock. "I worry about junior high students being let go early on …

Congratulations to the new board, I wish them the very best. The board will face several challenges in the near future. Springfield will eventually dump the pension responsibilities to local school boards, plan for that now. Also, take a closer look at the "common core" you have already implemented, what are the long term costs? Also, the common core goes against the 10th amendment, these are …   more ›

District 15 to Hold Special Meeting Friday for Vote on Late Start Early Release

A decision on whether children who attend District 15 schools will start school late, or leave school early one day a week to allow for teacher development time, is expected to be made Friday night by the District 15 school board.

The Late Start/Early Release issue has been simmering since December of 2012, when the school district first reached out to parents to make them aware of it.  The goal is simple; to allow for teacher development time once per week to allow for additional training time to prepare teachers for Common Core standards and other benchmarks required by the Illinois State Board of Education. The issue is, when should it happen.  Parents became highly involved in the question of late start vs. early release when an initial survey was sent out by the school district in early January. One parent in particular, Lisa Szczupaj, created a Change.org petition that attempted to gauge input on whether an early release on Friday should be considered as an …

Palatine High School Evacuated Tuesday Due to Power Outage

Students were brought into the football stadium on Tuesday afternoon after a partial power outage was reported at the high school, according to the Palatine High School website.

Students at Palatine High School were evacuated Thursday afternoon due to what is being called a partial power outage, according to the Palatine High School website.   According to a student at PHS, at 12:30 p.m. a member of the administration entered the lunchroom and announced that all students had to evacuate the school and go to the football stadium.  While there, students were kept busy with human bowling games and races, the student said.  Before 1:30 p.m. the student said Principal Gary Steiger got on a microphone and explained there had been a small fire in the school, and that none of the smoke alarms or sprinklers were activated.   The Palatine Fire Department was on the scene, according to the student, when they were allowed …
