Local Student Named to Tribune's All-State Academic Team

Fremd High School's Renata Wetterman is one of ten Illinois high school students to be chosen for this year's Chicago Tribune all-state academic team.

Fremd High School senior Renata Wetterman, who plans to pursue a career in pediatrics with a focus on global health, has been named to this year's Chicago Tribune all-state academic team.  The 18-year-old Inverness woman plays the cello and badminton, is a four-time state speech qualifier and has volunteered as a private tutor, according to the article.  Wetterman has also traveled to Haiti to help rebuild an orphanage and again with a church group to open a computer lab and teach basic computer skills, according to a Chicago Tribune article. District 15: Arbitration Looms for Late Start Early Release Decision

The Classroom Teachers' Council grievance filed regarding the decision to instate an early release on Fridays for teacher development time is now headed to arbitration, according to the Journal and Topics.

The recent decision by the District 15 school board to instate an early release on Fridays will now go to an arbitrator to determine if the contract with the Classroom Teachers' Council (CTC) has been violated, the Journal and Topics reports.  District 15 Superintendent Scott Thompson said the date for the hearing with the American Arbitration Association has not yet been set, according to the Journal and Topics, and added that after the hearing occurs, it could take up to 90 days for a ruling on the issue.  The District 15 school board held a special meeting on Friday, May 3, to make a decision on the issue that has loomed since December of 2012 when the idea was first introduced.  District 15 parent Lisa Szczupaj said at the meeting, "…

I have discussed this issue with five elementary teachers, they are ALL fine with early release Friday, mystified by the union, and concerned about their standing in the community. Two found out about the unions decision after I did!! Who is representing whom?? The only reasoning I've heard is that teachers are too tired to have an effective meeting Friday afternoons. Congresswoman Duckworth Visits Northwest Suburbs to Award Winning Art Submissions

The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide high school arts competition sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives. The winner, a Palatine High School senior, will have her artwork displayed in the U.S. capitol.

On Saturday, May 18, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth announced the winners of the 8th Congressional District Art Competition at a Reception in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The competition was open to all high school students living in the 8th congressional district, and students were made aware of the contest by their art teachers.  The theme was to depict "nature in the modern world." "I was interested in showcasing how we can have both nature and progress-if we approach the two in a responsible way," Duckworth said during the presentation ceremony Saturday.  The first place winner was Alyssa Froehling, a Palatine High School senior, with her submission of “Symbiosis”. Open houses will be held at three properties in Palatine this coming Sunday, and will showcase the work of students in D211's Building Construction Program.

Students in District 211’s Building Construction program are in the final stages of completing three houses they have worked on for the past two years. District 211 will host an Open House for students to showcase their hard work and allow the public to see the homes that are up for sale. The Open House will take place on May 19 from 2 to 4 p.m., and the public will have an opportunity to place bids on a house if they are interested. “This is a culmination of two years of work for our students, and it’s a great opportunity for our kids to show off what they have learned and accomplished to their parents and community,” said Otis Price, director of Athletics, Activities, and Career Development. “We will open the houses for bid sale, and …

Fremd's C.J. Patton Wins State Gymnastic's Title

Patton came home with a first place finish in the pommel horse and an 11th place finish in the all-around finals.

Fremd High School's C.J. Patton took home a first place finish at the state gymnastics's meet this past weekend at Lincoln-Way East High School Frankfurt.  C.J. Patton, a senior at Fremd, finished first in the pommel horse with a final score of 9.550 and also received a medal in the all-around finals, finishing in 11th place with a final score of 51.750, according to the Illinois High School Association website.  Patton also placed 11th in the prelims for the floor exercise, 48th in the prelims for the still rings, 26th in the prelims for vault, 22nd in the prelims for the parallel bars and 17th in the prelims for the horizontal bars.  The following local Palatine High School students also made the trip to state:

IHSA Sets New Rules for Youth Football Practice

"These guidelines are based on the most recent scientific evidence, as well as the expertise of the coaches who will help implement them," said Dr. Preston M. Wolin, a member of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

The Illinois High School Association approved new safety rules Wednesday to limit tackling in youth football practice in an effort to reduce head injuries, reported the Daily Herald. In March, a controversial bill sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) proposing to limit the number of days players could have full contact hitting practice (once a week) failed in the House committee. The new IHSA policy calls for coaches to gradually increase the time players can participate in preseason practice, along with the number of protective pads they can wear. On the seventh day of practice, players can participate in five hours of full contact drills wearing full pads, according to the IHSA. However, no single practice can exceed …
