FREE National Weather Service Spotter Training

The Village of Palatine's Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service will be co-hosting two training opportunities on severe weather spotting.

The Village of Palatine’s Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service will be co-hosting two training opportunities on severe weather spotting. This FREE training will be held on March 13, 2013 at 1PM and again at 7 PM in the Emergency Operations Center located at 200 E. Wood Street, Palatine, IL lower level, west entrance.

The National Weather Service's (NWS) primary mission is to save lives and protect property through the issuance of warnings for hazardous weather. However, NWS meteorologists also depend on real-time reports from trained spotters to know exactly what is occurring on the ground during a storm. The NWS trains citizens to identify severe storms and tornadoes and report them via organized communication networks

This training is about 1 ½ to 2 hours in length and consists of a slide and video presentation which examines severe storm structures, identifying cloud features and other environmental clues associated with severe storms and tornadoes. Additionally, communications systems and spotter networks are explained as it pertains to how storm spotter information is used by the NWS and local officials.
