Sandburg Dedicates Meyer Media Center During 50th Anniversary Celebration

Carl Sandburg Junior High celebrated its 50th anniversary Thursday with an all-school assembly and a dedication of its media center to a longtime District 15 Board of Education Member.

Carl Sandburg Junior High celebrated its 50th anniversary Thursday with an all-school assembly and a dedication of its media center to a longtime District 15 Board of Education Member.

The District dedicated the media center in honor of Joel D. Meyer, a long-time Rolling Meadows resident who served for 21 years on the District 15 Board of Education—from 1957 to 1978. Mr. Meyer played an active role in the Board’s decision making process at a crucial time in the District’s existence. Enrollment stood at 3,775 students when he joined the board, and it climbed to 11,019 by the time he resigned in 1978. The Board passed 11 referenda and built 16 new schools—including Carl Sandburg—during his two-plus decades of service.

“Mr. Meyer, it is my sincere wish that this facility that now bears your name will continue to serve the students of Rolling Meadows and Carl Sandburg Junior High School for another 50 years and beyond,” said Superintendent Scott Thompson during the all-school assembly celebrating the school’s 50th Anniversary. “Congratulations, and thank you for your 21 years of dedicated service to Community Consolidated School District 15.”

Following the assembly, which featured historical video and Power Point presentations and the singing of The Beatles Birthday by Carl Sandburg’s entire student body, the District held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly christened Meyer Media Center, and a reception for Mr. Meyer, his family, and a number of special guests who attended the celebration.

“What can one say when receiving an honor such as having a facility bear his name? Nothing but ‘thanks’… and yet that doesn’t seem enough,” said Mr. Meyer while addressing those gathered for the reception. “Is this honor a repayment for services rendered? It shouldn’t be for just me; it’s an honor for all those who served on this board as volunteers chosen by our community to give guidance to the educational program our children are receiving.”
