D-15's Summer Nutrition Program Serves More Than 8,000 Meals

District 15's federally funded summer nutrition program served a total of 8,131 meals this year, topping the mark it set last summer by more than 1,400 meals.

Over the summer, Community Consolidated School District 15's School Nutrition Services served a total of 8,131 meals through its federally funded summer nutrition program, topping the mark it set last summer by more than 1,400 meals.

The growth of this program is important because many students simply don’t have access to nutritious meals during the summer break, said Bobbie Desprat, School Nutrition Services director.

The program served 7,031 free breakfasts to District 15 residents under the age of 18 at six sites—John G. Conyers Learning Academy, Winston Campus, and Gray M. Sanborn, Jane Addams, Lake Louise, and Virginia Lake Schools. That’s 860 more breakfasts than it served at these locations last summer.

The program also provided 1,100 meals to students who participated in the District’s Summer Blast program at Lincoln School, and to students who participated in summer camps at Falcon Park and Gray M. Sanborn School. Northwest Community Hospital assisted School Nutrition Services with these meals by providing fresh fruit for the campers to enjoy.
